Romeo is culpable for all the deaths in the play due to his impulsiveness with love and his actions. He is responsible for the deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Juliet, Lady Montague, and himself. The first death that happens because of Romeo is Mercutio’s, he dies when Tybalt comes to find Romeo. Tybalt finds Mercutio and they start bickering, which leads to Mercutio being provoked into a duel by Tybalt. Romeo intervenes and tries to make peace by coming in front of Mercutio, blocking his view. The hot-headed Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm, leading to Mercutio’s death. This is a clear case of Romeo being culpable for death because he murders Tybalt in cold blood. Near the end of the play, Romeo causes another four deaths, the first being Paris. Paris encounters Romeo at Juliet's tomb. Paris challenges Romeo to a duel because he thinks Romeo has come to destroy the tomb. Romeo kills Paris in the following fight. Again, Romeo's actions are directly responsible for Paris's death because he murdered him. Surprisingly, Romeo somehow manages to cause his mother’s death offscreen. That happens because his mother, Lady Montague, is sad about Romeo’s exile, which happens because he kills Tybalt. These actions of Romeo lead to Lady Montague’s grief and death. While his intentions were not for this to occur, it still does, due to Romeo’s actions. Last but not least is Romeo causing the star-crossed lovers' deaths. Romeo is directly culpable for his death, choosing to take the poison, believing that Juliet is dead. When Juliet woke up and saw that Romeo was dead, she took her life with Romeo’s dagger.
