Tybalt finds Mercutio and they start bickering, which leads to Mercutio being provoked into a duel by Tybalt. This is a clear case of Romeo being culpable for death because he murders Tybalt in cold blood. Near the end of the play, Romeo causes another four deaths, the first being Paris. Paris encounters Romeo at Juliet's tomb. Paris challenges Romeo to a duel because he thinks Romeo has come to destroy the tomb. Romeo kills Paris in the following fight. Again, Romeo's actions are directly responsible for Paris's death because he murdered him. Surprisingly, Romeo somehow manages to cause his mother’s death offscreen. I think Mercutio is one of the easiest characters to blame for most of the deaths in the play because he was battling Tybalt when he was killed. Mercutio was part of the reason for his own death. Mercutio’s death then lead to Tybalt’s death because Romeo killed Tybalt after Tybalt killed Mercutio. After this, Romeo was banished from Verona for murdering Tybalt. This lead to Lady Montague’s death because she was so depressed about Romeo’s banishment and Mercutio’s death. “ Alas, my liege,my wife is dead to-night; grief of my son’s exile hath stopp’d her breath”. (5.3.225-26) This is a quote from Montague in the last scene of the play when he was standing beside the dead bodies of his son, Romeo and his loving wife, Juliet.
