In this paper I will reflect on my person leadership style and practices. To get the ball rolling, I completed the “Seven Habits Profile” to get a better idea of what kind of leader I am. The first category is my “Emotional Bank Account.” This was eye opening for me because it is so easy to pick up on bad habits in this category. The first of these practices is speaking negatively of others when they are not present. This is a very common practice in my department at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. It is very easy for us to default to negativity and share our frustrations with others on the team. My team members are the only ones that truly understand what I go through day to day. Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
Everyone develops habits in their life, but it depends on whether or not you have an obsession or develop an addiction for it. In Chapter 9 of “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, Angie Bachmann has a gambling addiction which led her to massive debts. She is a wife of Brian Thomas and have 3 daughters. Angie Bachmann should be held accountable for her gambling debts because her set of rules weren’t working, was tempted by Harrah’s perks, and her environment shaped her to become addicted.
People must conduct professional behavior to be successful in their professional role and disruptive behavior threatens the patients’ safety. As defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the disruptive behavior is intentional actions that disrespect others and create unsafe environment in delivery of patient care (Juengel). Many factors contribute to the disruptive behavior in the work setting, for example, stress, fatigue, frustration or burn out. This type of behavior causes trouble in achieving desired goals and may delay in patient treatment. This paper will briefly explore how a healthcare professional shows disruptive behavior and ways to correct this behavior.

There are several ways to define leadership, but what sets effective leaders apart from commonplace managers are their extraordinary actions and the successes that result. In The Leadership Challenge, James Kouzes and Barry Posner claim leaders that employ The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership are much more effective than those who do not (2012, p. 25). This paper will be reviewing my assessment findings, exploring my strengths and weaknesses, examining my personal-best leadership story, and detailing a specific area of development.
Upon review of the “Seven Habits Profile” worksheet, I can clearly see that there are both strengths and weaknesses in my leadership style. This worksheet has made it obvious that my leadership style is behavioral. My concerns are mainly people and task oriented. I hold a high standard for initiating and securing structure while taking into consideration the wellbeing and trust of my employees. I am employed at Everest University in Tampa, FL as the Director of Allied Health. This puts me in charge of the success of 3 current educational departments (Massage Therapy, Pharmacy Technician, and Medical Assistant).
In the book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey, lessons for personal change are presented in a very powerful and understandable way. The Habits can be applied to our own lives, our leadership of other people, a school or any other organization that can be run more effectively. However, before an application of these Habits can be made, a basic understanding of the material presented in the book must be obtained. Comparison with other leadership styles and theories can also clarify and reinforce this understanding as well. Finally, application can be made to a particular setting, a school.
Leadership is a position given by the people who want to follow. In other words, it is a privilege not a right. The purpose of this paper is to explain who I am as a leader, and in return allow room for improvement to strengthen my weaknesses. This paper will show a variety of self-assessments, all looking at my leadership style from different angles. This angle ranges from my cultural beliefs, to how I determine what has more value or not, to evaluating my understanding of sources of power and influences, even to evaluating my creativity as a leader.
The subject of personal leadership is widely recognised nowadays as it is often believed that successful leaders not only have the ability to lead other, but also know well and able to control oneself. In order to understand more about myself as a leader, I registered for this course. Around two months of this course, I have gained considerable knowledge which will be clearly documented in this Reflective Learning Diary. Staff behaviors control the performance and capabilities of an organization. Most workers display productive or counterproductive productive behaviors that have effect on workers, clients, and programs. The ability to control these behaviors is a necessary part of delivering exceptional services. Many workers automatically adopt behaviors that fit in with the best interest of the organization. Although these behaviors are common, some employees fail to follow order and create havoc for others around them. Productive behavior allows workers to perform daily functions whereas counterproductive behaviors develop issues that are costly. Good behavior contributes to goals and objectives set by the organization (Britt & Jex, 2008).
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 2004) has become the cornerstone of leadership and management wisdom. The habits emphasize personal responsibility and personal leadership. There is challenge in living everyday under the guidance of the habits but there is also great benefit as living the habits can influence everything we do in life. I was introduced to Covey’s seven habits through a one day seminar at my workplace several years ago. I learned some of the terminology and a few of the concepts but never really understood the power of the practical application of the habits. Reading the Covey materials has taught me that life is not about all the tasks that I accomplish but instead about accomplishing the tasks that support what is important to me. Covey has taught me that there are elemental components that are applicable across the many roles that I have in my life. Those universal elements are integrity, vision, discipline, and passion. Embracing these ideas has opened my eyes to the endless applications and benefits of living the seven habits.
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
A habit can be many things, some good, some not so good. Everyone has habits that they would like to change and maybe improve upon. I believe the majority of habits I have are good ones but some are not. These bad habits are the ones I will talk about.
