According to Oxford dictionary, diversity is referred to as the state of showing a great deal of variety. In this case, diversity is defined as cultural diversity in a society or a specific region. Wikipedia states that “The phrase cultural diversity can also refer to having different cultures respect each other's differences.” Malaysia proves this statement as the three main ethnics are able to live together in harmony since Malaya’s Independence Day in 1957, although there were numerous obstacles along the way, threatening to topple the very foundation of the cooperation that exists among Malay, Chinese and Indian folk. Although we are all different in religion and race, unity is crucial if we are to work as a single organism to prop up the country’s name on the international stage. So, exactly why is diversity within society so important? Firstly, to put it simply, our lives are just more interesting! Can you imagine living in a country where every person you see has the same language, accents and religion? Eventually, we would all get bored, desperate for some new and interesting faces. Curiosity is a difficult flame to extinguish. For example, when a Buddhist asks why his Muslim friend doesn’t eat during the day, he would explain the concept of fasting in the month of Ramadan. From this, many beneficial moral values can be obtained by enquiring others on their way of life. Therefore, the Buddhist friend will develop respect towards him, by not eating in front of his fasting friend. Besides that, our cultural-based knowledge would increase, as would our level of wisdom. Diversity involves cultural differences, such as origins, religious or political affiliation, race, and gender, and other more profound differences, such as experiences and personality. As Banks argues in her research, the real definition involves several elements of our identity (149). Therefore, the way in which we define and conceptualize diversity affects the way in which we interact with people of others culture, race, and affiliations.
Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
In Haiti, the family is the most important aspect of their culture. When making important decisions, especially involving the health of a family member, the family is consulted. Family is so important to the culture that everything a person does is reflected onto the family. Everyone represents the family they are in. Because of this, every Haitian family has a reputation which can affect its status and respect in society. Families are so close to one another that it is mandatory to visit a sick member, even if they live far away. In a healthcare context, this can lead to a large number of visitors.20
We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. I know that it is likely that a teacher will not be able to cater to every student, but it is important to involve each of them.
