Race and Cultural Diversity
The term racism means inequity or injustice based on race. It can also be the principle that talks about the differences in human personality or capacity and that a specific race is absolute to others. This can be as a result of language, traditions and customs, or any feature that the person possesses. The idea of racism has been in existence in the history of humans for a very long time. For the past years, racism of westerners towards those who are not from that region has had more impact than any other type of racism. Nigerians work with this principle from the biblical scripture that says: “train up a child in the way he should go, and that when he grows old, he wouldn’t deviate from it”. I receive advices from my parents about the kind of company I keep both in school and back home. They are bent on judging my friends from the way they dress, talk, and if they were thought to be respectful. There is an ethnic group in Nigeria called the EDOS’. My parents have made me believe that they have this kind of sorcery powers, which they use in doing all sought of evil. This has made me withdrawn from having their kind as friends. In schools also, racism is practiced. Students who are been admitted into colleges, after passing entrance examinations, get their admission letters rescinded all because of cultural identity and favoritism. Most lectures give passes to students who come from the same ethnic groups as them or to those who pay tips to pass. The kind of advices I would be listening to at the stage of my life, is the kind that will be of benefit to me and my educational career, and not that which will turn me into a racist. Although I’m still growing up, I’m old enough to make decisions for myself. Those advices my parents used to offer are very essential, but not all of it.
