Teaching is a difficult job, and one that I believe requires a vast array of skills and attributes in order for one to be successful in. The image of ourselves that we project to our students can become a model for our students to follow. Many people, myself included, still remember many of their high school teachers and look up to them as role models. It is important to recognizes the skills and attributes that teachers have not simply because they will help you to be successful in your career, but because we want to ensure we are being positive role models for our students.

Therefore, a teacher must be flexible in what they plan because they must be prepared to meet multiple learning styles, subject interest or varying arrays of comprehension of the lesson. Teachers must be willing to adapt styles that they prefer learning and teaching in to ones that fit their students more so than themselves. Secondly, a teacher must be organized. One of the most important things a teacher does is give feedback to their students so they can evaluate how close they are to meeting the outcome. In order to provide feedback in a relevant time period a teacher must be able to balance assessments and planning with all of their other duties as a teacher and the best way to do is to have a solid system of organization. Teachers also must have an organized approach to their lesson planning so they can create lessons that will engage the students and help further their knowledge of the outcome they are working towards. As I read these articles, I agreed with almost everything that was said. The Great Teacher Question: Beyond Competencies, by Edward R. Ducharme begins with a sentence that basically sums up my reason for teaching, “I begin this essay by defining a great teacher as one who influences others in positive ways so that their lives are forever altered” (Ducharme, 1991 p. 2). Successful teachers develop the whole child by making integrated efforts to promote their student’s academic, social and emotional learning. Children need to be aware of themselves and others; make responsible decisions, and be ethical and respectful of the people around them.
Before the lesson is prepared, the teachers must have a clear understanding of the objectives of the lesson to be taught. By having an understanding of what they students will able to accomplish at the end of the lesson, the content remains focused and thorough. The teacher must then express these objectives to the students including the standards for performance. Students can then be held accountable for expectations that are known.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Having my mission statement easily accessible aids in being both organized while planning and capable of managing my class efficiently. First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. One quality that would make me a good teacher is, I am good with kids. I believe a teacher needs to be able to care for the children they are teaching. Also, you should be ecstatic about being able to be an influence on their lives. I like working with kids and like to help them understand things they may not know. When I was in Middle School we did a thing called “Study Buddies.” We would go to the classrooms everyday for the last few periods of the day and help kids read and do their homework. I worked with three kids everyday and they were so genuine and appreciative.
