Regarding the teaching process, teaching may be seen as three-step activities: planning, activities in the classroom and activities after the lesson (Haynes, 2010). The first step consists of planning and preparation activities, which are required before teaching in a class. The second step is the activities in the classroom (classroom management, teaching, and learning). Activities of the third step take place after the lesson (assessment, with associated activities such as recording and reporting, and evaluating). In this study, teacher’s lesson plans are used to analyze the teacher’s preparation in implementing project based learning starting from the planning until the implementation process in the classroom.

This obligation is applied to classroom teachers in SD/MI and those who teach specific subject in SMP / MTs, SMA / MA, and SMK / MAK. The lesson plans development should be compiled before the beginning of semester or school year. Even so, the lesson plans need to be refined before the teaching and learning is implemented. The lesson plan development can be done by teachers independently and/or in groups at school/madrasah. The lesson plan development can also be done by teachers in groups of schools, or regional coordination or MGMP (Teachers Association). Internally, by using a lesson plan a teacher will have both a framework and a guideline for teaching activities (Brown, 2001). By using this guideline, the teachers will at least know what kind of activity that they will ask their students to do and how long each activity should last. At the end of the lesson, teachers should have an expectation of what their students should accomplish, and lesson plan is a guide that will assists them to realize such expectation. In other words, a lesson plan may function as a proposal for action in classroom teaching and learning process (Harmer, 2007b). Hence, the teaching and learning process should be optimized.
