In order for learning to take place in the classroom the teacher has to put in place an effective teaching and learning strategy. Being an effective teacher is not something that can be achieved instantaneously but rather something that has to be continuously developed and improved upon over time. Petty mentions how good teachers are not born but rather make themselves and that effective teaching comes from learning from your mistakes and successes. Petty, p. 516, 2009. This process involves teacher reflection and assessment of the effectiveness of different teaching strategies used in the classroom. It is only then that teachers can learn and advance themselves. Closed ended questions can be used to quiz if students understanding the basic principles behind the learning outcomes. The use of effective open ended questioning should be used during discussions with students to obtain a deeper level of understanding. Marsh (p. 188 – 189, 2010). Petty mentions how questioning should encourage all students to think. He goes on to say that students should be given time to respond to the question asked and praise if correct answers given. (2009, p. 193). But traditional questioning has its limitations as can be hard to include all of the class. Assertive questioning on the other hand is more active and engaging for the students. It is the pair or group work that that make assertive questioning all inclusive. It shares student knowledge on a topic and helps weaker students to learn by doing. (Petty, 2009, p. 282 - 284). During my own classroom observation it was noted that the level of questioning with the students needed to be improved upon. Reynolds and Muijs (1999) mention one of the main requirements to be an effective teacher is knowledge of the content being taught. First, Jacobson states that children need to receive better feedback from their teachers to show them that what they are doing is correct. Jacobson further describes the need for external rewards, such as a good job or keep it up. Another way to reveal feedback is to visually show them how they have improved, such as showing students the charts that reveal their reading level has increased (Jacobson). Positive feedback and encouragement from whom the students look up to, their teachers, not only pushes children to do better, but also shows that the teachers are aware and proud of the improvements that are being made. Jacobson then states that asking open-ended questions allows students to get on the mindsets of learning from their personal thoughts and less of answering just to get the right answer. By asking open-ended questions in the classroom with everyone silent, it allows the students to gather their individual response to the question and gives them time to think about their answer, which in the end builds confidence (Jacobson). Jacobson’s last idea to influence students is to engage the disengaged. He refers to this as calling on the students who seem to be avoiding your open class discussions (Jacobson). In the inquiry based approach, the teacher goes on the learning journey alongside the children and the focus is not on what is being taught, but rather on the learning process (Murdoch, 1998). Additionally, learning is relevant and meaningful in children’s lives and connected to their current funds of knowledge and other areas of the curriculum (Arthur, Beecher, Death, Dockett & Farmer, 2015; Bateman, 2014). One benefit of the inquiry process, is that it promotes a variety of skills which are vital for children in the 21st century. Because of the rapid progress in technology, teachers have no way of knowing the skills students will need in their future jobs. Therefore, the main things students need to learn are how to learn and how to think. The skills developed during the inquiry process include information processing skills, critical and creative thinking skills, communication skills and reflective and metacognitive skills (Reynolds, 2012). In LIBS 6144, I implemented an inquiry lesson with a small group of fourth graders. For this lesson students were to pose their own questions about a topic. Students were to work through the stages of inquiry facilitated by the teacher based on the students’ questions. This artifact included a lesson plan, a student product, and facilitation of student learning incorporating 21st Century skills.
Through exploring multiple learning theories and reflecting on my own teaching beliefs, I have developed my own theory of learning. As I developed my theory, I wanted to consider what it takes to be a highly effective teacher. An effective teacher must have mastery of instructional strategies, classroom management, classroom curriculum design, and use assessments as feedback (Laureate Education, 2010a). By using a variety of instructional strategies, teacher’s can meet the learning styles of all the students in the classroom. Effective classroom management can lead to students feeling safe and more willing to take risks. When a student feels comfortable to take risk, then learning will increase and the students’ confidence will grow. Classroom management also creates order in the environment, which will allow effective learning to occur. By understanding curriculum, the teacher can target skills and causes learning to take place. Teachers need to deliberately plan lessons around standards and specific goals based on curriculum and the school’s mission (Marzano, 2010). Assessments need to be use to guide instruction and used as a “method for improvement and mastery,” (Marzano, 2010). While determining my own theory of learning, I believe that I need to consider what effective teachers demonstrate in the classroom.

In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.

Effective teachers are those that can develop the knowledge and skills they need in the classroom, they are well prepared, and produce higher student achievement (NCATE, 2013) . Teacher effectiveness is assess through the grades students get in the classrooms but a much more comprehensive system for assessing teachers is needed to determine their preparedness to enter the classroom as a sole practitioners. Teacher preparation is composed of two elements the knowledge they poses of the subject to be taught and knowledge and skill in how they teach that subject (NCATE, 2013). Many teachers have the knowledge of the subject but fail to teach the subject. Knowledge is not the same as teaching, there are a variety of differences between the two. A teacher goes to school learns a myriad of subjects decides on one and goes into learning how to teach that subject. There is a difference between knowing the material and being able to teach it.
My teaching career has been spent learning how to provide appropriate support, guidance, patience, & understanding, as well as to enhance academic growth & success, for all students. My purpose as a teacher is to enrich and inspire the lives of young students with moderate/intensive needs by providing access to information instead of functioning as the primary source of information for students to flourish. My teaching methods will be to create an environment ripe with opportunities for discovery and exploration which will allow all students to learn at their own pace, generate questions and construct knowledge, while providing hands-on practice of skills in authentic situations as well as to make learning intriguing and meaningful to all students. Carefully planned and constructed learning environment will also allow the teacher more time to meet the individual needs of each student. Another important factor to a well-prepared learning environment is to facilitate learning, and providing students with balance and consistency (2004). Young students require a balance between various classroom dimensions, including activities guided by the teacher and independent work, quiet work and active work, gross motor and fine motor activities, and open and closed aspects to the curriculum and classroom materials (2004). Consistency is also a required condition for learner success. Schedules (daily and weekly), the enforcement of classroom rules, and student expectations should not be in flux but remain consistent. This paper will identify different definitions of an effective teacher, along with how to assess teachers for being effective. Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
Assessing student understanding is important but as a teacher you need to provide feedbacks to the students. During my lesson, I allowed the student to ask questions and tried to answer each individual’s answer right away. Since my students are not able to read or write I had to provide feedbacks by verbally.
