In the article, “Students Cheat Themselves Out of an Education,” by Daniel Ross, Ross
argues that students who cheat do not think of their consequences, because they are
cheating to succeed due to all the pressure they have upon them to excel in school. Many
students cheat for a good grade, not because they are lazy or unintelligent.
I agree that cheating is going to happen, and there is no way to stop it because students
are pressured into getting good grades in college. Being in colleges is already tuff on
students. We spend multiple hours studying and doing homework for at least four classes,
which takes up a large amount of our time. However, for this delimma cheating should not
be a factor or an excuse to cheat.

cheating, some of the main ways to cheat include plagiarizing, copying answers, and having someone do your work for you. For instance in Rosses article, Ross explained how a student named Eamon Higgins was caught doing work for international students at many schools including SMC.
Higgins was payed to do work for
these international students and he also used their identity so he could take tests for them.
In this case this is bad. Cheating in college is serious because you can become expelled,
loose your credibility with your professor, and there is a chance that it will be placed on
your transcript.
Professors should be more strict on how they are preventing cheating in their
classrooms. Since technology is giving students more ways to cheat, all technology needs to
be excluded in the classroom. Since copying information off the internet is one of the newer
trends in plagiarism teachers need to take action. One thing they can do is stay present in
the classroom if there is an exam or a quiz. By staying in the classroom you will be able to
have an eye on each student so you will know if they are cheating or not. Another method
to prevent cheating is to have open book exams. If you give open book exams you can really
test your students knowledge on the material. Instead of giving easy questions out of the
book, make the questions difficult, that way the student will have the answers right in front
of them.
Having an unfair advantage is infuriating to honest students like myself who do
not cheat in school. For example, when I was in high school I sat beside a guy who cheated on every test that was assigned to us. I found it to be very unfair because as I worked very hard, he continued to cheat his way through the class. Later, he found out cheating in a pre calculus class was not the best idea because when the day of the final came there was no way he could cheat since each student was given a different version of the test. Overall, cheating will continue to occur. As bad as it may sound, students will do anything just to get a good grade, wheather it’s taking a test for another student or cheating your way through most of the semester it will happen. Students have come to realize that their future is on the line if they do not make the grades that will get them into college weather it’s undergraduate school, medical school, or gradschool every students wants to succeed.
In conclusion, cheating is a dishonest action, and its effects could tremendously impact other people around. Alerting authority figures about dishonesty actions can help motivate students to learn the subjects thoroughly and build meaningful life experiences. Although we might lose a friendship, but in the long run, friends will be thankful, since who knows if they are in a situation, where they actually need to use their knowledge, in the workforce they are
Almost every student has cheated at one point or another for some reason they use to justify it and they could be any one of these forms of cheaters. Although all these types of cheaters will attempt to rationalize their cheating with various excuses and reasons there is no real justification. They all know it is the wrong thing to do, but will cheat anyways as they can get away with it and it will create the illusion of greater intelligence for themselves and that is a problem for the youth of America. It will make students learn to cheat better instead of actually learning the material assigned to them, resulting in a less intelligent generation.
From plagiarism to dishonesty, many high school teenagers cheat just to get a good grade in a class or they simply are bad at that particular subject. They cheat on tests, quizzes, and even on big projects. No matter the circumstance, if you are ever to be caught, you should be served with the toughest of consequences. You should not be trusted. You should have any second chances. After all, even if you don’t get caught for cheating, you are not learning anything the class has to offer.
There is an ever broadening problem spreading throughout colleges all across America: cheating. Is it a serious offence or just a harmless crime? Cheating is on the rise, but schools and colleges are not far behind with ways of dealing with it. Mark Clayton deals with this issue in his essay entitled “A Whole Lot of Cheatin’ Going On.”
Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. For the student, there is either a social or an economic incentive to be gained by cheating [MacGregor, 2012]. However, cheating, more specifically, cheating during exams or in graded assignments gives the students who cheat an unfair advantage over those who remain honest and study hard to excel in the same examination or assignment. Grades are reflection of knowledge and competence gained through learning. Therefore, acts of academic dishonesty undermine the validity of student learning. This, in turn, has effect on academic system in two ways – 1. It reflects poorly on the academic standard or quality of education being imparted by the institution from where the cheating student earned his/her grades and 2. It also interferes with faculty’s ability to correctly diagnose gaps in student learning for the purpose of both re-teaching current students and re-designing instruction for future students [Passow, 2006].
The justifications behind cheating range from laziness to an unwillingness to put forth the effort to learn the expected material. Some students blame a lack of self-confidence in one’s ability to learn or lack of interest in the subject. Many modern students lack time to devote to academics, because of hectic schedules. Some students blame instructors for not providing clear expectations or practical applications of academic topics, encouraging a student to devote the necessary time to the material.
School systems today are so lenient in their rules, guidelines and consequences; thus causing cheating, copying or forgeries to be frequently used. Many students take advantage of copying someone else's work whenever they are given the chance. Other times, students will simply have someone else do their work and turn it in as their own, not realizing the effects this behavior can create. This creates a lack of creativity, no sense of responsibility and the students will never acquire new knowledge. These practices of cheating, copying and forgery by students are unethical and should be brought to the surface whenever possible.
Over the past decade or so, we have seen a huge increase in cheating in our schools. The introduction of the Internet into most homes and schools and other technological advances are some of the main causes. Students are misusing the new technologies to find new and more high tech ways to cheat. During testing students are receiving answers via text messaging devices, they are downloading notes to iPods and graphing calculators, they are picture messaging exams with their mobile phones, and they are even hiring look-alike experts to take the exams for them. They can use the internet to easily plagiarize a paper; they can pay a company to write the paper for them, they can even pay to use a prewritten paper from a database. The internet and technology are making it easier and easier for students to cheat, and as technology continues to advance, we will continue to see a rapid rise in cheating.
