According to Google, expectation is defined as a belief that someone will or should achieve something. To me, expectation means every person as an individual has the capability to reach certain standards that please them and their lifestyle. When I think about expectation I think about how my professors push me and want me to do well in my classes. They push me to do good because they expect nothing less of me and that makes me want to work harder so that I can reach their expectations. Although expectation is an incentive to help you do something, I believe that you are not defined by what others expect of you and you can achieve this by having an open mind, focusing solely on yourself at times, and realizing that other people’s expectations for your life are minor compared to your expectations. …show more content…
I believe that as a human being everyone cares about other opinions and that’s okay, if you view their opinions in a minor way. For example, my grandmother doesn’t like tattoos but I would like to get one soon. I will listen to why she doesn’t like them and take her thoughts into consideration but I’m not going to let her opinion affect how I feel about the tattoo I want. Me listening to what my grandmothers opinion on tattoos is me having an open mind about the situation. While having an open mind will help you learn and get to know and respect other people’s opinions, it will also help you to find yourself more. You may not believe certain things until you hear them explained in a certain thing or way by an outside view other than your
Expectations are define as personal belief that something will happen. It’s similar to judgment or assumption people made to a certain person or group of people. It may not be true and it could be different from what is expected. People can also change how they live their lives based on their own expectations just like how the Greasers and the Socs had different expectations. These two groups have contrast expectations that caused bad actions to come up or lead them to benefits for their own group. Expectations may force people into something they are not, even if it is to become a hero or the opposite.
In the novel, The Other Side of the Bridge by Mary Lawson, the author capitalizes upon society’s expectation of a character to emphasize the struggle to achieving his goals. Ian, one of the central characters in the plot line, is heavily impacted by these expectations, which hold a substantial influence upon his decision’s regarding his future. To teenagers an expectation: a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future, is nothing but a restriction upon them. Ian believes he is contained within these expectations; to the point where he does not wish to follow this given path. In a time of adolescence, teenagers are compelled by the strong desire to denounce that which is expected of them; Ian is no exception to this. Societies expectations create a negative influence upon Ian’s struggles to achieve his goals. These effects are due to the following expectations: to leave Struan for a superior education, to obtain the opportunity to become successful; to strive for a medical career, since he excels at the trade already; and to settle into a happy relationship, to raise a family.
...their son, however, these expectations are unrealistic. Unrealistic expectations are one of ways to maintain family’s function in equilibrium. (Loeschen, 1998) In this family, Siu-ming is expected to enter Secordary Six and univesity, also cooperate with his parents. Yet this expectation is set from the parents without considering Siu.ming’s willingness and competence. Hence, the expectation is just to makes his parents feel worthy by achieving this expectation and fulfill what his parents want.
Not everyone will agree with your view, or your way of expressing yourself. If you are aware of these differences and know the proper steps to re-evaluate the situation, you will be
The authors of this article discuss using a strategy for writing called the open-mind portrait technique. Most commonly, this technique is used to help students as they begin to craft narrative text, but in this case, the authors recognize that this technique can be a used to improve student’s expository writing skills; skills which become increasingly critical through middle and high school and finally into higher education and in most careers. Students struggle with writing in an expository manner, in reporting facts and making connections without expressing their own emotions or opinions. Furthermore, expository writing is inherently linked with the ability to read and comprehend information in a text book, something with which students

a way that is consistent with that expectation. However, it does not make the expectations come full circle when you just have an expectation and then it happens. Instead, the expectation has to be the cause or reason why something occurs. For example, let's say you walked outside this morning and thought that it was going to rain, and later it did. This would not be a result of the Pygmalion Effect or a self-fulfilling prophecy because it would have rained even if you had not predicted it.
What a person can conclude from these descriptions is that expectancy violation is a violation of one’s prediction. This theory understands communication as the discussion of information that can be used to disrupt the anticipations of someone else who will perceive the conversation either positively or negatively. Expectancies are mostly centered upon social standards and stereotypes of the communicators.
A persons’ image is vital when meeting someone for the first time. Our peers, employers, family, superiors, even strangers that you walk past can automatically judge someone, and imagine how they present themselves to the world. Tattoos have been predominantly linked with a rebellious attitude and pictured on out of control stereotypes such as rock starts, bikers, sailors, and disobedient teenagers who want nothing more than to hack off their parents. With a new coming of age generation and a step into a more lenient and liberal society these types of patrons still participate in body art but so do doctors, lawyers, or just the run of the mill house mom. Tattoos signify religious beliefs, cultural influence, or each individual’s sole style. Body art is no longer socially offensive, employers are more apt to hiring tatted hopeful applicants, parents are warming up to the idea of their children inking their body and no longer a stranger on the street with a tattoo is necessarily prejudged as a criminal or safety hazard. Tattoos have become more evolved over the years because they have become more of a socially accepted element of the general public.
Attitudes towards life have changed more and more over the years as the personal interest in tattoos grow. “Teenagers create control over life when they side with tattoos to control emotions and life” (Babb’s). “Making a permanent choice with ones body through tattoos is a huge commitment” (Babb’s). Undoubtedly sometimes the personal interest is usually based on stereotypes, and self-expression. “Tattoos are usually chosen to express something that lies under the individual’s skin” (scoop). The abstract world tends to look down upon the ones who take part in this art. People choose to really show what’s on the inside by revealing it on the outside with tattoos. Which is the only way they can express either feeling or emotions?
In life, expectations and outcomes are two variables that one must consider in decision making. In a perfect world, expectations and outcomes mirror one another. Unfortunately, the world we live in is full of variables; favorable and unfavorable. In order to become successful, one must adapt to their reality.
Emotionally based opinions are worthy of respect due to the fact that everyone should be able to signify their free expression without being criticized for what they believe. There is no need for criticism because even if someone's opinion is factually incorrect, in their state of mind, it is what they believe and they should be allowed to have their own perspectives. Everyone should be respected for thinking and believing differently. People form different opinions because their opinions are mostly based on emotion rather than logic. Opinions based on emotion may not be valid, but that does not make them irrelevant.
Dr. Gary Trosclair incorporates this idea of expectation causing pain in his journal article. He discusses the ordinary roots of depression that is seen among society today, one of them includes expectation. It is normal for humans to have anticipations for themselves, whether it is simply how they appear in terms of physical attractiveness or a life-long goal. It is also common for these objectives to be unfulfilled. The disappointment due to the high expectations people set for themselves leads to emotional exhaustion, that could potentially develop into depression. Dr. Trosclair mentions that humans feel the need to find a sense of meaning in their life, so that they feel worthwhile (Trosclair). The important message that the author wants to communicate with his readers is that self-acceptance is the way to avoid this let down from expectations that cannot be fulfilled. This concept of self-acceptance relates to what was learned in lecture. Self-acceptance is the main idea behind Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Concentrating on self-accepting thoughts rather than negative ones is key to the method. People should use this technique to try and fulfill their goals, however, as culture grows and transforms, they should take a step back and learn to be comfortable with themselves in the process to prevent heartache.
Many of us crave tattoos because we desire to define ourselves as unique individuals. There are different reasons as to why tattoo artwork accomplishes this. For many, low self esteem is the driving emotion that lands a person in the tattoo parlor. Shelley Twyman confirms this idea, stating that “many people feel better about their self image after engaging in a type of alteration of the body.” In actuality, Shelley’s research measured the self esteem of tattooed individuals as on par with those who didn’t have one, after the alteration. Additionally, body art is often used to express the belief or views of the individual. For example, Margo DeMello argues in “Body Art, Deviance, and American College Students”, quoted by Myrna Armstrong et al, that some tattooed individuals see themselves “as if they are some kind of substitute for a personal philosophy” (152). Myrna Ar...
