As someone who is in charge of the wellness program here at UIW, my job is to oversee all the aspects and find out what needs amending or implementation. There are six dimensions of wellness and each one has their benefits. The purpose is to take a look at each dimension of wellness and try to make some improvements for the staff and students. The University of the Incarnate Word has an excellent wellness program dedicated to their faculty and staff. They are offered a wide range of services. They also focus on multiple sections of wellness such as emotional, physical, social, environmental, spiritual, and intellectual. This is a really good thing because it is there to educate people on how to be healthier. They offer the staff not only classes to attend, but seminars as well. Personal wellness is all about being healthy. I also believe that it goes hand in hand with physical wellness. For this part, I would like to implement a link on their page that leads them to My Fitness Pal in order to help them log in their food intake. I believe that this would help them track what their dietary intake looks like and also keep them on the right track. I would also look into hiring a professional nutritionist on board who is also an expert in fitness. This would be a huge benefit for those who work on campus. They would have advice from a professional who can help them get to where they need to be. Another thing I found online that I thought was a great idea was to eliminate all sugary snacks and drinks on campus and offer healthy snacks instead. In their website, they state that intellectual wellness is the ability to open our minds to new ideas, to seek challenges, and to improve skills (Employee Wellness, n.d.). I would like to implement something along the lines of group meetings or seminars of those who work in the same department. This would allow the staff members to bring their ideas together and come up with new and invigorating ways to get their creative juices flowing. Events such as seminars and meetings allow for discussion and it also allows for people to come together and speak their minds. Reflecting back on the all the information learned this semester, I am amazed at how much I learned. Working in healthcare makes you aware of a lot of the topics that were covered, however, when you apply it to yourself, in a personal relationship, it becomes much more powerful what the impact of each topic is.
Once in the work environment the job of the employer should be to make sure that the workplace is organized and runs as smoothly as possible as to minimize some of the factors that may contribute to burnout such as understaffing and excessive hours. An enhanced quality of life at work would not only minimize stress levels but enhance performance as research has proven. A study done at Harvard University in 2010 showed that businesses that implemented wellness programs for their employees were able to cut healthcare costs drastically (Cutler, Baicker, & Song, 2010, p.1). For every dollar spent on these programs, they were able to save $3.27, so not only does the employee benefit but the employer as well. In terms of employee productivity all it takes is to look at some of the most successful companies in the world. Such companies often have great employee benefits and wellness programs such as Google, Facebook, and Costco (Adams, 2014, para. 1-3). The second dimension of wellness is emotional wellness, which has a lot to do with you ability to recognize your own thoughts and feelings and deal with them in a healthy way. There are a lot of ways to do this, such as: understanding and sharing your thoughts and feelings with yourself and those around you, and being confident in your self and the decisions you make. Some well known people who I believe have attained emotional wellness include Ellen DeGeneres and Doctor Phil.
If the health of employees can help or hinder a company, then why do companies still have sick days? With the “on the go” lifestyles, how can we not question the health of employees and their families. Today we have high stress jobs, rush hour traffic, and demanding schedules. Being healthy and fit is the way to conquer tomorrow.
Through a wide variety of product offerings including: personal training, nutritional counseling, and behavioral modification counseling as well as group cooking, fitness, and healthy living classes we offer a full-service experience to our members. Our fitness and wellness center is intended to be a place where everyone wants to go and bring friends, family and co-workers. We provide state-of-the art equipment, personal training, access to registered dieticians, and a behavioral sport psychologist who aide in our development of new training methods and skills.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
Knowing what each of these dimensions of wellness requires can feel overwhelming. However, one should not be discouraged because of what they lack, but look forward to the improvement we are capable of bringing to our own lives. Becoming more spiritual will always be beneficial. Anytime one can improve their relationship with God one can improve their life astronomically. Emotional wellness is possible even for those who have been through horrible experiences. Practicing emotional wellness can bring healing. Physical and nutritional wellness will lead to a longer, pleasanter life and social wellness will make that life worth living. Sharing a well life with family, friends, and God will make time on this earth an irreplaceable experience.
Human resources will need to place emphasis on employee wellness my initiating programs that “include work-life balance processes, stress management, and therapy programs, and facilitating an open dialogue about mental health and illness to remove much of the stigma that plagues the conversation and ailments (Guppta, 2016).” By utilizing flexible work schedule options, demanding jobs with high-stress levels are possible because employees’ free time does not have to be sacrificed.
Employee wellness programs are a great advantage to employers for many reasons. They can lower health care expenses and healthier employees have less sick days. Healthier employees achieve a higher rate of productivity and are absent less often. They also reduce injuries, workers’ compensation, and disability-related expenses. Before I took the class my view on wellness was mainly physical. I believed that wellness meant physical health. If you exercised and ate healthy you were in a happy place. However, this class made me realize it is much more than that. The one thing that changed my mind the most was reading about emotional wellness. I realized that you can have a fit body and not be sick but if you were stressed or did not know how to deal with you emotions, you could become depressed or even just unhappy with your life. All of the components of wellness I discussed in this essay not make me think about how I want to change my lifetime wellness goals and become a much more well rounded person. Be Healthy & Alive will be a10 week program which will accept 15 adult participants, who are willing to dedicate themselves into a healthier atmosphere. The participants must show willingness to change old behaviors, and accept constructive criticism from staff. The program will be held Monday-Thursday from 5-7:30pm. There will be various lessons covered, just to name a few: physical activity 101, first steps to changing a bad behavior, benefits of physical activity and so much more. " It involves both preventive health behaviors and a shift in thinking and attitude. Wellness is a lifelong promise to oneself of growth and achievement in each of the seven dimensions: emotional, spiritual, physical, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and social. It means a lifetime of ongoing change and always striving toward higher levels of healthy and successful living. This means, ultimately, that one must live a life that caters to each of those dimensions, both individually and collectively.
Throughout our healthy brains, healthy bodies course so far, we have learned time and time again about the strong and important relationship between our brains and our bodies. Health and wellness is not one single thing, it is a collection of practices, attitudes and ways of being in the world, which help us cultivate the best form of ourselves.
