Throughout our healthy brains, healthy bodies course so far, we have learned time and time again about the strong and important relationship between our brains and our bodies. Health and wellness is not one single thing, it is a collection of practices, attitudes and ways of being in the world, which help us cultivate the best form of ourselves. Finding and understanding the ways in which we can best take care of ourselves, and then applying them, gives us the opportunity to improve our physical, cognitive, mental and emotional wellbeing. Exercising is essential for the health of our minds and bodies. Not only can it improve our current functioning, research in epigenetics has shown that the practice of exercise can physically alter the expression of DNA, which can be passed down through generations. The implication of this research allows us to see that the environments that we place ourselves in and interact with can drastically alter our lives, right down to the expression of our DNA. This means that exercise can be so beneficial, that is may cause certain negative genes to be inhibited from being expressed. While changes in the expression of our genes may be altered, our phenotype, the underlying genotype is unchanged. The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training. Yoga training students were engaged in a four week program. They were administered tests and the beginning of the study, prior to engaging in the program, at the end of the program, after completion, and then again at a 3 month follow up.
