Trust and credibility are not built over night. They are built through a process, and that process takes time. You need experience, a ton of experience, to develop trust and credibility with yourself and others. That experience can be achieved through communication. This is because everyone perceives things differently; no person sees something the same way as another person. Everyone has their differences, but through communication those differences become irrelevant. Once you have a strong bond with someone, trust will follow; communication is key to forming a bond. For example, my friend Taylor has been my best friend for fourteen years. She knows all of my secrets and I know all of hers. However, I would have instilled the trust that I have in her if it were not for the great communication we demonstrate. We are like sisters attached by the hip. We do everything together. We know each other like the back of our hand. Experiences and repetition of actions will allow others to see you as a credible individual. The sense of community DSWS promotes has helped to create the feeling of trust and credibility among others. Our environment too, has helped to create trust and credibility. Living on the same floor allows us to be open with each other and really get to know each other. Also all the activities we did together during welcome week helped to create trust and credibility with each other. The Summit Vision field trip was extremely impactful to the trust and credibility we share with each other. Our trust in each other would not be nearly as strong as it is if we did not do all those team building activities. We had to trust each other to accomplish the tasks we were to finish. This was extremely evident when we had to get people up to the platform through the trap door. Trust is a trait one should obtain for the people they know are the most honest. To trust someone means to put ones full confidence and reliability on an acquaintance such as someone one is close with. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus, one of the leading characters put his complete trust in the people trying to tell him what he should believe. Brutus joined the conspirators to help take down Julius Caesar because he believed it was what was good for Rome based on what he was deceived. Trust is the one thing in this world that lots of people desire. Who wants to have any type of relationship without trust? It is not something that should be automatically given though, trust has to be earned. People should not automatically trust just because they know them or have been knowing them for a while.
I find that in order for me to do work and to be in relationship with others, there must be some form of trust or reliance in the other person or people. Our ability to selflessly give ourselves to others comes with a guarantee of reciprocation. We trust in order to be trusted. Some issues that surround trust is the members within the group will feel vulnerable. Reason why vulnerability is presented is that members are opening up to a room full of strangers. Members may feel that others may judge them or look down on them when they feel comfortable to open up to the group. There are multiple methods to build trust within a group one is “Exposing yourself” Open yourself to others. Not in a dangerous way where people can take advantage of you, but rather in a way that demonstrates honesty and humility. Your group needs to know that you are just like them. This really does go along with my personality because as I mentioned before I struggle with trusting others. In order for me to trust another person I must gain a sense of security with the other person and feel that I am able to relate to them. I think about how I may benefit from their friendship and how they can help me be a better person. I am somewhat surprised that this was not my second or even first personality preference. Credibility holds significance in a leadership position. According to Kouzes and Posner, the foundation of leadership is the act of credibility (2012). Without credibility, organizations can deteriorate. The lack of credibility in a leadership role creates mistrust and ill feelings towards leaders. These burdens constituents carry, disrupts the organization of being successful. Leaders should full understand credibility. Credibility is earned when leaders set example and commit to their words (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). When credible is present within an organization, constituents are more motivated, committed, and feel a strong sense of team spirit for their company (Kouzes & Posner, 2012).
You can tell that person anything without thinking they will judge you. They can also tell when something may be going wrong with you. Without thinking twice they will call you, and tell you to explain everything that is going wrong. If you trust them too, you will quickly tell them everything and all they will have to do is listen, and be there to support you . Trust, I think, is a word that spreads far beyond our ability to define it.
As Catherine Morris states in her article, Building Bridges to Healthy Relationships, “Trust means that you have placed your confidence and faith in you partner, and that you expect honesty, integrity, loyalty, and respect to be at the center of your relationship. You also expect you partner to keep promises and confidences, and stay with you when the going gets tough. ”(1) Humans require trust in relationships like car needs gas to run on. A relationship, most of the time, is established by a trust affiliation.
Trust should always be mutual in relationships. It’s very important to trust your partner and to be trusted in return by them. When there is mutual trust in your relationship, no amount of problems can ruin it. In spite of differences and arguments, trust assures you that your partner loves you. This feeling of trust that you share mutually is what makes the relationship last for long.
