There were tons of incidents where employees were fired for social media use. I found some incidents related to privacy issues in hospitals. In one case at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, the 60-year-old man had been stabbed more than a dozen times by his nursing home resident in which his throat ripped so brutally, he was almost decapitated. Instead of focusing on saving him, St. Mary nurses and other hospital staff snapped photos of the dying man and posted them on Facebook. As a result of this unacceptable action, four staff members were fired, and three discipline. Have you ever been confronted by an employer or administrator because they just so happened to come across a post you made on a personal account of yours? A friend of mine almost lost her job because of a situation like this. One day, while she was at work, she posted a tweet saying that she was tired of her job. A couple of days later, she was approached by one of her managers. Her manager acknowledged the tweet and also mentioned that his boss saw it as well. She explained to her manager that it was not her intention to be “insulting”. Her manager strictly explained to her that if he were to be notified about a similar post, she would be fired. I believe that her tweet was a personal thought and that she was only expressing how she felt at the moment. In result of this, employers should not hire or fire employees based on the content of their social media.

The purpose of this essay is to reflect and critically study an incident from a clinical setting whilst using a model of reflection. This will allow me to analyse and make sense of the incident and draw conclusions relating to personal learning outcomes. The significance of critical analysis and critical incidents will briefly be discussed followed by the process of reflection using the chosen model. The incident will then be described and analysed and the people involved introduced. (The names of the people involved have been changed to protect their privacy) and then I will examine issues raised in light of the recent literature relating to the incident. My essay will include a discussion of communication, interpersonal skills used in the incident, and finally evidence based practice. I will conclude with explaining what I have learned from the experience and how it will change my future actions.

The decision to use social media is very resourceful in the hiring process, yet it is not a reliable source because it invades an employee's personal life, causes discrimination against potential employees, and does not represent a candidate well.

Healthcare workers use social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and snapchat in their personal life. HIPAA plays a big role in health care. HIPAA regulations “require health care providers and organizations as well as their business associates, develop and follow procedures that ensure the confidentially and security of protected health information when it is transferred, received, handled or shared” (California Department of Health Care Services). There are scenarios that violate the HIPAA rule that can possibly get healthcare workers into certain circumstances. One of the obvious effects is loss of production and wasting time. Studies have shown that employees would regularly check their Facebook page and Twitter even when they are at work. Also, information that is posted on social media cannot be completely deleted and that post could later on ruin someone’s life. So a cause of this could be maybe someone got into an argument with someone and took it to social media such as Twitter. What one posts online because of their emotions, could later lead to trouble.
