After being recommended by multiple people to watch The OA I have finally given in and watched the premier episode. After finishing the episode I can definitely say the the story writers have done a fantastic job of opening up questions about the characters like OA and Steve, as well as to build up these characters without giving too many details. Throughout the show the audience is left wondering a large number of questions: Who is "the OA?" How did she loose/regain her sight? How does she know so much about people? As well as many more questions that even after sitting through one hour are left unanswered. The show gives you just enough to want to know more about the characters and what happened to the OA, but doesn't yet give you enough …show more content…
When there's a close up on Nancy and the OA you can see the sun shinning through. This is a stark contrast to the darker, grayer and ultimately more dreary feel that the show begins to give you after the OA is our of the hospital and once she's back at home with Nancy and Abel. Along with this the camera tends to be very close in almost all the shots and tends to make you feel closer to the characters and perhaps even give you a certain tunnel vision that the characters might have. Overall after watching the first episode I got a strong sense that the writers of the show wanted to make you feel like you were getting more of a first person narrative (much like the OA's story at the end of the episode) where they pick and choose what information you have about the environment and what is going on instead of giving you an abundance of information and allowing you to wade through everything. This is further expanded upon when the OA goes into her story near the end of the episode. Up until her story the show hadn't given you any information outside of the acting. You weren't aware of the show's title, producer, or acting line-up. This made you feel more like the story is from the characters perspective and then the writers went on and didn't introduce the show until it was time for the OA to begin telling the story. It gives the general feel
If it were the perspective of the mother the reader may have na understanding of what actually happened to the mother or how she ended up in her husbands arms. Changing the visual details of the last page completely changes the outcome of the story. A slight change of camera angle shows the reader a brand new perspective as
The Oka Crisis was a land dispute in Canada between the town of Oka, Quebec and the Mohawk community of Kanesatake. In 1989, the mayor of Oka, Jean Ouellette, had announced that the remainder of pine trees near Kanesatake would be removed to add an additional nine holes onto a private, members-only golf course club and the development of sixty condominiums. Three years earlier, the Mohawk people filed a land claim for that area, but had been rejected because it failed to meet key criteria. The development plan was the start of the crisis because that land is a sacred grove and burial ground to the Mohawk people. This resulted in a protest by the Mohawks against the court decision to allow the start of the golf course construction.
In comparison to other slaves that are discussed over time, Olaudah Equiano truly does lead an ‘interesting’ life. While his time as a slave was very poor there are certainly other slaves that he mentions that received far more damaging treatment than he did. In turn this inspires him to fight for the abolishment of slavery. By pointing out both negative and positive events that occurred, the treatment he received from all of his masters, the impact that religion had on his life and how abolishing slavery could benefit the future of everyone as a whole; Equiano develops a compelling argument that does help aid the battle against slavery. For Olaudah Equiano’s life journey expressed an array of cruelties that came with living the life of an
This installment of the popular series enters its final chapter and promises to live up to previous episodes as this time the future is at stake.
Omi and Winant’s concept of racialization is formed around the theory that race is a social conception while Bonilla-Silva’s is formed around the theory of racialized social systems. We will first look at Omi and Winant, and then we’ll move onto Bonilla-Silva’s concept of racialization. Omi and Winant say “Within the contemporary social science literature, race is assumed to be a variable which is shaped by broader societal forces.” (Omi & Winant 1986, pg. 3) The racial line in the United States has been defined and reinforced over centuries. Whites are seen as a “pure” while those who are mixed are categorized as “nonwhite.” This sort of thinking comes from the idea of hypo-descent. The theory of hypo-descent is as follows: no matter how small the African American ancestry a person has, they are still considered African American. Marvin Harris said “The rule of hypo-descent is, therefore, an invention, which we in the United States have made in order to keep biological facts from intruding into our collective racist fantasies.” (Omi & Winant 1986, pg. 3) The notion of “passing” began after the implementation of hypo-descent. Individuals who are categorized as “black” according to hypo-descent attempt to bypass discriminatory barriers by “passing” for white. When an individual is “passing” they try to assimilate themselves into the other race. “Passing” made it to the Supreme Court with the Takao Ozawa case. Ozawa, a Japanese male, filed for United States citizenship under the Naturalization Act of 1906. Ozawa stated that he had assimilated to the “white” way of life and should be considered “white.” The Supreme Court found that only Caucasians were white, and the Japanese were an “unassimilated” race.
Chiefs Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) is an extremely effective tool to help refine leadership and understand one’s self. The CPOA course offers a vast opportunity for self reflection and learning how to communicate with a multitude of different personalities. There were a plethora of topics taught during the 5 week course; however the topics that had the greatest influence and inspiration for me personally were the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), Disc profile, and ropes course.
In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.
Sadly, it’s all smoke and mirrors. Everything built this season amounts to a whole lot of nothing save for some small plot points that essentially scream, “Man, I really hope that we get a second season so that we can actually do stuff with all this!” The biggest problem is that audience basically sees all the cards (or at least the cards that matter in the context of this season) by the halfway point, and knows more about what is going on than the characters. That level of dramatic irony can be interesting if written well enough; alas, the vast writing power in this anime went toward thinking up ways for the glasses girl assistant to hit on
...oducing us into the main characters and dramatic issues. The opening must also plant details that may seem unimportant to us, such as the volleyball scene. When you first see Carrie playing volleyball, she looks like quiet timid girl but as the locker room shot appears, you see Carrie washing her body. It plays as confusion that she would be more reluctant to show her body off. As the scene plays you can see the intimidation the other girls have over Carrie. Not being told what a period is and no one there to help her.
The setting and atmosphere bring true emotion to the reader that allows people to possibly get a glimpse of what that kind of life might be like. Survival is a consistent theme that is shown throughout the novel. The conflicts each character faces brings inspiration to the reader and reminds you that maybe what we are going through right now might not be so bad. Works Cited Donoghue, Emma. A great idea.
Head to head hits are still a prevalent issue in the Nfl. Should head to head hits lead to an ejection from the game? If a player in college football commits an intentional helmet to helmet hit, the penalty is an ejection. If college football can input this penalty, couldn’t the NFL? We see that former football players who suffered many concussions over their playing careers, have long lasting effects. Some current players feel as though that they can’t control where their hits land and injuries are just a part of the game. Some fans feel as though all these penalties are taking the fun away the game. Former NFL players are an example of what helmet to helmet hits can do.
Throughout the years of the early Church, councils were created where Christians gathered and discussed issues about our faith. Most councils were created in order to refute heresies, which were detrimental to our faith and confused Christians. Others, such as the Council of Jerusalem, was solely created for deciding what it meant to be a Christian and dealt with Gentile concerns. Altogether, these early Church councils have shaped our faith and are used as references when settling matters.

One of the first points that Johnson brings up is Multi Threading. Since the early 2000’s, many shows have taken advantage of this device. Shows such as “The Sopranos”, “24”, and “Lost” all take advantage of multi threading. Just to prove the point that this is what the people want, all three of these shows were very popular. In fact, they all lasted for at least 6 seasons each, with “24” going for 8 seasons. The idea of multi threading is to create multiple plots all going on in a single episode. Yet, at the end of the episode usually all of the plots become tied into each other. This causes the viewer to think ahead of time. It leaves you wondering what is going to happen later in the episode, or even what could happen down the line. Often, so many subtle things are said that the viewer may not even realize what was said or done was important until an event occurs.
Openness to experience is one of the ‘Big Five’ factors and is used to study and measure individual differences in personality. A person with a high level of openness to experience will often enjoy venturing beyond his or her comfort zone. They seek out new, unconventional and unfamiliar experiences, travelling to new destinations, embracing different cultures and practices. This investigation will be conducted to analyse the effect of musical situation on openness to experience. It is hypothesised that if a participant listens to a preferred genre than their openness to experience percentile will increase. People share different perceptions therefore this data will be subjective because subjective data is based on self-reports provided by
