The number of concussions in professional and amateur football has been rising and has sparked much controversy in recent years. These concussions are most likely linked with disease and even the deaths of some pro and semi-pro football players. New research is attempting to solve the problem but the issue is still prevalent in football today.
Not many sports are as physically demanding on the human body as football. The physical toll that football players pay is almost impossible to comprehend unless one has actually played the sport for a significant amount of time. However, until recently any connection between the hits taken by football players and their health down the road was largely ignored. A common, yet difficult injury to detect in football is a concussion, the most common traumatic brain injury (Pearce). A concussion is defined as “a brain injury that is caused by a sudden blow to the head or the body. The blow shakes the brain inside the skull, which temporarily prevents the brain from working normally” (Heiner pa.5). Reports and studies have surfaced shedding light on just how much damage is inflicted upon the brain due to crippling hits. These studies suggest that NFL athletes who received concussions suffered lasting damage to the brain, which opens the gate to a multitude of other health issues such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and clinical depression (Pearce). This is an aspect of the game that not many are aware of and it is a serous issue that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. There have been too many heartbreaking stories such as that of Justin Strzelcyk who heard voices and died in a crash while fleeing police or that of Andre Waters who shot himself in the head after struggles with depression (Zarda pa.1). Many current and former players are suffering in silence; this shouldn’t be the case. The National Football League needs to extend a hand to former players debilitated by head injuries. The problem of concussions and other head injuries in the NFL is one that needs to be tackled head on.
Through most of my time in high school, I always found myself writing more of exploratory writing for two simple reasons; it took a shorter amount of time, and relating writing to my personal experiences was something I had no need to look up. Exploratory writing is a time to take advantage to relate your own personal experiences and an attempt to make a connection with a certain reading. In ‘Concussion,’ forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu discovers a neurological deterioration, something that is very similar to Alzheimer’s disease in the brain of former NFL football player, Mike Webster. Later in time, Omalu named this disorder chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Many other athletes face this same problem with the same disease in the brain. Doctors are still trying to raise public awareness about the dangers of football-related head trauma. This movie has been a big part in changing the rules of football and how it is played. Researcher for CNN, Dr. Julian Bailes has said that, “We are taking out unnecessary head contact out of the sport, out of practice. We're enforcing rule changes," Not only has the movie ‘Concussion’ made an impact on how they feel about getting rid of the game of football overall but it also has many people in agreement, such as well-known doctors, that the game is a dangerous sport. The fact that the NFL did not have to accept liability as part of its concussion settlement, does not mean that they are not responsible, in fact, they should make it their duty to ensure that the football becomes a safer sport for everyone. It is extremely frustrating to hear that people do not care about the consequences of the player's injuries because they are just interested in the game. This truly upsets me because the lives of many players have been shattered as a result of depression or suicide that comes as a result of brain trauma. I think it is ludicrous to continue to tolerate these harsh plays knowing that they have detrimental effects just because people refuse to assimilate change. How can one truly enjoy football if the violence in the sport causes depression, concussions, dementia and suicides as a result of brain trauma? The league created these rules to make the game safer. The causes of these rules being applied were the depression of the players once they receive the hit to the head, a disease that was found in former players after collisions, and concussions.

From personal experience of viewing football at the high school level, whenever there has been a collision so strong that has caused the player’s helmet to fall off from impact I have never seen the athlete or coach to instruct them off of the field to check the helmet for its fit or evaluate the player for a concussion. Bleacher Report's Michael Felder believes that the rules implemented in college and NFL football are ruining the game. Felder says in his article How College Football’s New Helmet Rule is Hurting the Game for All that the new rule is hurting football because instead of getting to the root of the problem coaches and trainers will automatically turn to tightening the helmet than figuring out how the player’s helmet should be changed in order for it to stay on., Felder says, “When that helmet is too tight, you're compromising its ability to distribute impact and for the interior to move with the head as it is designed.” While Felder has a valid point that the rule will be causing more issues than helping figure out the root of the problem, the NCAA and NFL will need to enforce and follow through with the precautionary measures of following up with the athletes when their helmets come off.
