Josef Albers, a prominent artist of the 20th century whom created astounding paintings that evoked his passion and curiosity for color. He mastered a wide range of mediums and continually shared his explorations with his students. Josef Albers is an idol the art community will never forget.
Josef was born on March 19, 1888 in Bottrop, Germany. At the age of 17 he became an elementary school teacher. By 25 he studied in Berlin to expand his skills and become a certified art teacher. Through the years he continued to build his education attending several art academies; The School of Arts and Crafts, Munich Academy, and Franz von Stuck. In 1922 he enrolled to Bauhaus, a teaching institution in Weimar, Germany. Here at Bauhaus is where his achievements began and where he met his lifetime partner, Anni. Henry Tanner and Alice Barney were both exceeding talented artists. Great artistic ability can be seen in both “The face of a Jew in Palestine and “the face of a Negro Boy’. While their painting techniques are similar, the two artists have their differences. In comparing these two works of art, I have learned that each artist possesses their own unique way of expressing their talent, even if it is art work of the same medium and style.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter was born of peasant stock, in Mensenschwad, a small village in Germany’s Black Forest. His early training, as an apprentice in a studio in Freiburg, began when he was thirteen. He learned engraving and he supported himself as a lithographer, while he studied painting in Munich (nga, par.1). Even though he is known to be an academic painter, this seems to be a contradiction, as Webster’s Dictionary states that an academic painter followed rules and conventions, while a painter from the Romantic Movement broke away from convention and painted more by feeling and freedom of form, which is what Winterhalter did.
Born in Haag, Austria, in 1900, Herbert Bayer grew up in the period of the fast changing environment and technologically revolutionary years. After serving in the Austrian Army, he started studying architecture under Professor Schmidthammer in Linz, but in 1921, he enrolled as a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he studied mural painting with Wassily Kandinsky. Bayer was later appointed by Walter Gropius to head the first printing and advertising workshop in Dessau. “Under Bayer’s charge, the newly installed workshop developed into a professional studio for graphic design and commercial art. The study of the communicative potential of letterforms and typographic layout was part of a basic curriculum in the mechanics of visual education. As the German painter and sculptor, Kathe Kollwitz conveyed in her statement that the art she created held the burden of transfiguration. The fixation of sorrow and hardship that occurred while she sat huddled with the children was the driving force of her drawings. Her realization that art could not only be an escape from the horror happenings in Germany such as the rationing of food and the starving-to-death children at that time was also a way to voice her opinion of change and revolution. It was the quest, in which she enamored in her drawings and it is this feeling that I value from it. I choose this artist because she delineated the various circumstances surrounding the human individual, she took into account perspectives that involved life with its tragedies, and the lives of little angel children. Her drawings and sculptures were prepared to emulate and capture what her eyes had seen while she was in Germany and this is why I had taken a likening to her drawings. The two artworks that I am specifying in this research paper is the drawing labeled “Germany's children starve!” and”Self-Portrait, Hand at the Forehead (Selbstbildnis mit der Hand an der Stirn)”.
Pablo Picasso was fostered for creation, his love for the work he did and for the people he shared it with led him to be the most dominant artist of the 20th century. The foundation for Picasso’s successful life was set early on. He was brought into this world by mother, Maria Picasso Lopez (Bernadac and Bouchet 18), and father, Don Jose Ruiz Blasco (Cabanne 1), on October 25th in 1881, at 11:15 p.m. (Bernadac and Bouchet 17). Gustav attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts in which he lived in poverty(Eva Di Stefano pg. 20). Gustav Studied architectural painting until 1883. He looked up to Hans Makart who was Vienna's most historical painter of the time. In 1877 his brother, Ernst Jr, who, like his father(Eva Di Stefano pg. 20), would become an engraver as well enrolled in the school. The two brothers and their friend, Franz Matasch, began working together and by 1880 they had received numerous commissions as a team that they called "Company of Artist"(Eva Di Stefano pg. 22). This group also helped their teacher in painting murals in the Kunsthistorisches Musem in Vienna which I find to be very helpful and I feel like that helped shaped Gustav to become a better person. Klimt started his professional career painting interior murals and ceilings in large public buildings on the RingstaBe, which included a successful series of "Allegories and Emblems(Gustav Klimt pg. 35)

Bauhaus is a German term meaning the house of construction and commonly understood by many as the school of building and operates from the year 1919 to the end of 1933 . The institution was founded by Walter Gropius and was located in Weimar. This paper shall critically analyze whether Bauhaus succeeded in merging art with mass production and technology what challenges they went through and if at all their ideals were limited to design for an elite.
In the early twentieth century, the Russian born painter Wassily Kandinsky, was well known as the leader of the abstract movement. Kandinsky was born in Moscow on December 4, 1866, in which he discovered his love for drawing and painting. Kandinsky was inspired by Monet which resulted in the desire for him to experiment different ways using color on canvas. Kandinsky’s love for art started when he was just a young boy. His parents were both interested in music; however, their marriage ended in divorce leaving five-year-old Kandinsky with his aunt in Odessa. With his aunt he learned to play the piano and cello in grammar school and also studied drawing with a couch. Kandinsky followed the wishes of his parents and went to law school at University of Moscow. After he realized that a career in law wasn’t for him, he decided to abandon his career and move to Munich to devote his time and effort to art (Bio.com 1).
The Bauhaus was one of the most influential modernist art schools of the 20th century, not to say the most influential one. Their main concern was to teach, and to understand art 's relationship to society and technology. The school was founded by the German Architect: Walter Gropius. Consequently, The Bauhaus of Design had a huge impact in Europe which is the central continent of art and the United States even after it has been closed, and has forever shape the development of Art history from now on. According to the art story website, the Bauhaus of Design was shaped by the 19th and early 20th centuries trends such as Arts and Crafts movement, which had sought to level the distinction between fine and applied arts, and to reunite creativity and manufacturing. Which later on has had affected some major artwork such as architecture and graphic design and as a result, had also inspire the romantic medievalism of the school 's early years, in which it pictured itself as a kind of medieval crafts guild. But in the mid-1920s the medievalism gave way to a stress on uniting art and industrial design, and it was this which ultimately proved to be its most original and important achievement (Art Story). The Weimar Bauhaus was the first of the Bauhaus’ formed by Walter Gropius with only one goal in mind, to create the next generation of artists and craftsmen. At first the goal was to create a combined arts school within the next two years the Bauhaus had employed several big name artists including the names of Oskar Schlemmer, Paul Kleee and Wassily Kandinsky and Theo Van Doesburg who was to promote De Stijl.
In the following essay I will discuss how the Bauhaus changed the way design was thought forever. Educators such as Johannes Itten, Gerhard Marcks and Hannes Meyers were significant in the shaping of the Bauhaus’s education system. Although their attitudes towards education differed, they worked together to bring a change to the world. I will also discuss the graduates; Josef Albers and Annie Albers, their work and how the Bauhaus influenced them.
