Being overweight puts you at an increased risk for health conditions, such as high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, stroke, and certain cancers. (See References 1, p. 1) The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services favors weight loss at a gradual rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week, stating that it's easier to keep the weight off long-term, and to get used to the required lifestyle changes. (See References 1, p. 5) At this rate, you can lose 5 to 10 pounds in five weeks. Step 1 Accumulate a daily deficit of 500 to 1,000 calories through diet and exercise. In a week, this adds up to a deficit of 3,500 to 7,000 calories, and since there are 3,500 calories in one pound of fat, you'll lose weight at the expert-recommended rate of 1 to 2 pounds. Currently my weight, according to health standards, is unhealthy and qualifies as being obese. Obesity is defined as an individual having a high amount of extra body weight, which is not from muscle and bone, but rather excess fat . Being obese puts me at a higher risk for developing weight related health issues, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and some forms of cancer(“Assessing Your Weight”, 2015). The word "diete" originated from Old French "diete" meaning "regular food" c.1225 AD and from Latin "daily food allowance, prescribed way of life," also from Greek "diatia", originally meaning "way of life, regimen, dwelling," from diaitasthai "lead one's life."¹
This turns into a cycle of weight loss and gain, which can increase “the risk of degenerative diseases such as obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and cancer” (Vaghefi par. 7). These diseases come into the picture due to the cycle. Fad diets promote weight loss, but not fat loss. When the goal weight is attained, and the diet stops, weight is put back on, which leads to more fat being put into the body than taken out and faster weight gain. When losing weight, the biggest way to avoid developing these major health issues is to “not believe or follow any of the fad diets that promise easy and quick weight loss, because there is no such thing” (Vaghefi par. 8). Safe and healthy weight loss happens gradually, with patience and with exercise and a balanced diet. Fad diets are dangerous and should not be used as they can cause major health

First, it is important to understand the role and significance of fatness as a racialized and gendered trait. Due to its highly visible nature, fatness is considered a “physical stigma,” which “serve[s] as a crucial marker of social status, or rather the lack thereof,” because it is relative, meaning that it is dependent on historical and cultural context. With the rise of scientific study and the taxonomy of race, ethnicity, and gender by scientific and religious “experts” in the nineteenth century, fatness became an obvious point of physical differentiation, functioning to position black and white as opposites in more ways than skin color, based on the newly established “scientific” racial and gender hierarchies. (See References 2) Since there are 3,500 calories in 1 pound of fat, it'll take a deficit of 7,000 calories a week to reach the maximum expert-recommended weight-loss rate. To contribute to the caloric deficit, set a foundation of doing 150 to 300 minutes of moderate cardio per week, and strength training on two nonconsecutive days.
