Social media is a highly interactive platform for individuals and communities to share, create, discuss and edit user-generated contents, with the help of online and mobile technologies (Kietzmann et al., 2011). Social media is very effective in facilitating knowledge sharing and brings about good opportunities for organizations. Not only does Social Media enhance people-to-people connections, it also simplifies the processes of people-to-data access (Hansen et al., 1999). Personalization-based technologies, coupled with codification-based technologies connect knowledge owners and knowledge seekers, expediting the exchange of tacit knowledge. Social media technologies encourage easy access to knowledge residing in experts’ minds through bridging the temporal and spatial gaps between knowledge seekers and knowledge owners. Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse. The use of social media today is becoming more prevalent than ever before because of the convenience it offers.
Ten years ago, we did not have social networks like Facebook or Twitter, or internet for that matter. As each year passes, social media is becoming more and more prevalent. New users sign up on a daily basis to see what the buzz is about. It is natural to think social media is just for teens, but the growing number of adult users make it incredibly diverse. Communication is now instantaneous. Electronic communication has come a long way in the past century. It started with person to person communication via the telegraph, eventually evolving with devices like the telephone. In recent years further development of the internet has made it possible for an individual or a business to mass communicate on its own. Started as a way for individuals to communicate and connect with one another over the internet, social media has evolved into a valuable tool for business.
