Currently, social media is the most popular method of communicating and interacting with others. It is a methodology to new media as it changes and evolves with our needs and expectations. Social media has evolved and adapted to become a huge part of our personal and professional lives.
In today's standard in Canada, almost everyone has some form of social media, whether it's the standard e-mail or the popular, Facebook, YouTube or Twitter. The phenomenon of social media began in the 1970s with the first e-mail. E-mail enabled people to send detailed messages back and forth, rather than using the traditional snail mail. People were able to share their personal experiences with their friends and family all over the world with a click of a button.
Facebook is an online social networking site that "give[s] people the power to share and make the world more open and connected"(facebook) Facebook is not only for connecting with old friends and meeting new people, the social platform has been able to reconnect lost family members. Social media has created unbelievable heart-warming stories of discovering lost family members like Anais Bordier and Samantha Futerman's story; Bordier discovered Futerman while watching YouTube videos and after discovering that the American actress looked exactly like her, Bordier was able to reach out to Samantha Futerman through Facebook. The two women found undeniable similarities such as their birthday, nationality and the history of adoption. Futerman and Bordier began raising money -- through the power of social media-- to help fund their "documentary about their newfound relationship and plan to film their first meeting and DNA test". The ways of communication have drastically changed over the years. Historically, he only way to communicate was to write a letter, which usually took a while to get where it was going. Then, technology started to grow with the invention of the telephone in 1876. Technology continued to rise with the computer being invented around 1936 which then brought us emailing in the 1970’s. With the rise of computer technology and finding faster ways for people to communicate, social media and networking were born. Social media is a way for people to interact with each other, share photos online and exchange thoughts or ideas about something. The increased utilization of social networks, such as Facebook, has altered the means in which people attain and practice communication, and the social skills that are necessary to function in their daily lives. This form of communication has changed how people look at their friendships and relationships, has caused issues with people’s privacy, and has resulted an increase in Cyberbullying.
Did you know that suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in America? Well it’s the truth for every suicide there are at least six attempts. Suicide and mental has been an issue that can be caused by social media, and even ignoring the topic because nobody is well enough informed about the topic.
Social media is a revolution, which we are currently experiencing. It has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, and opens up many more avenues to share news, information, and just general chit chat. Social media is relatively quiet young, but is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Traditionally when an individual passed away, people would send flowers, baked goods and cards to the family of the deceased as well as attend the funeral to pay their respects. Now it seems when there is a death, people pay their respects by writing a message on the Facebook , posting on the family of the deceased about their condolences, or their own personal Facebook timeline as well as other social media websites. Social media has made a sufficient impact on the way many people deal with grief, whether it’s their grief own or someone else’s. Some individuals have a difficult time trying to find the right words to offer when someone is dealing with pain, therefore writing a message over a social media website eliminates the fear of awkwardness
