“We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it.”(Qualman, par. 1). Social media is the crutch of today’s society. This way of virtual communication has effected the masses completely and has taken over lives completely and continues to grow without an end in sight. There are many pros and cons to social media and many reasons for why it is still around. In reality, social media has prevailed throughout society’s development because people are able to communicate on a more global scale.
Due to social media, people all around the world are able connect and discuss many topics that range from serious things such as politics to more frivolous things such as what a celebrity wore on the red carpet. Nowadays, everyone has some type of a social media account so that they can talk to whomever, “Smart phones and social media expand our universe. We can connect with others or collect information easier and faster than ever” (Goleman, BrainyQuote). The ability to branch out and connect with people or to become socially conscious and aware of what is going on is a huge reason people still use social media. These three effects of why social media is still relevant are a few of the many things that are shaping society. Also, the overwhelming need to push things back and procrastinate because of the siren call that is social media is why social media has prevailed. People want a reason to not do something, and social media is the perfect target. In summary, social media is still around because it continues to grow and surpass previous expectations.
