The ways of communication have drastically changed over the years. Historically, he only way to communicate was to write a letter, which usually took a while to get where it was going. Then, technology started to grow with the invention of the telephone in 1876. Technology continued to rise with the computer being invented around 1936 which then brought us emailing in the 1970’s. With the rise of computer technology and finding faster ways for people to communicate, social media and networking were born. Social media is a way for people to interact with each other, share photos online and exchange thoughts or ideas about something. The increased utilization of social networks, such as Facebook, has altered the means in which people attain and practice communication, and the social skills that are necessary to function in their daily lives. This form of communication has changed how people look at their friendships and relationships, has caused issues with people’s privacy, and has resulted an increase in Cyberbullying.

Social Media began affecting our communication and relationships as early as 1969 when the first internet service provider become available to U.S. universities. In 2002, Friendster, the first social media website available to the U.S. was created and gained over 3 million members in just over 3 months. One year later, MySpace launched. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, a 24-year-old Harvard student, created Facebook, an online social networking service. This service was originally a way for students to interact. Today it is the world’s largest social networking service and allows over a billion users to connect though posting photos, sharing links, and comments which all appear on a “News Feed” that blasts out this information to all your virtual friends. For the current generation, this new way of communication is facilitating the act of never losing contact with anyone they have ever met. It also allows anyone on this platform to create new relationships with people they are interested in connecting with via internet.
In 1997 social media started with the site Six Degrees, which let users create a profile and become friends (Hendricks, 2013). After social media became popular the world of communication opened up into ways that are hard to imagine sometimes. Now a person can talk to someone on the other side of the world and it sounds/looks as if they are right beside them. In the last 300 years there has been so much change to communication, it is hard to believe there will be just as much, in not more change in the next 300 years. People will not even remember what it was like to write letters and mail

Today’s generation does not understand how Facebook makes our society more interconnected. With the growing number of people joining social networks like Facebook, communication with others is easier than ever. Juliane Elliot argues in her writing, “How the Internet Has Changed the World,” that Facebook has dramatically changed our everyday lives in several ways. For example, it allows people to build stronger relationships with friends and family by providing a method of easy and quick communication. Furthermore, businesses have increased advertising through websites like Facebook because of the large number of people that are exposed to ads and also since posting an advertisement is effortless. Lastly, political life has greatly improved since politicians can now reach out to their voters with the click of a button. Opposing these arguments, however, are other authors that write about how Facebook has led to a loss of personal communication and productivity, and can spread falsified evidence. Although the validity of Facebook as having a positive impact on society is at question among groups opposing social networking, Juliane Elliot is most persuasive in her argument because of her use of logical reasoning, emotions, and practical application in everyday life.
This research is unique because it will give light to the individuals who are against social networking that will not take to consideration that it has any positive outcomes at all and to those who believe that social networking has no downfalls and are too blinded by the social networking to even notice the affects it has on their own lives.
Ever since the age of social media ushered in, the people in the society can easily be in touch with one another. Social media defines the relationship that exist around the network of people (Walter & Rivera,2004). The very first social medium, Six Degrees, was created in 1997 to allow users to make and customize their profile and to make friends with other user which leads us to the very purpose why social media is very popular today. Social media has been created because of the necessity to share tons of ideas and to connect with other people around the world by engaging on real time conversations through sending messages and having videoconferences. It has become so essential that it already became part of the people’s everyday life and has become one of the most essential means of communication among the people in the society regardless of their distances to each other. Social media allows social networking to happen extremely efficiently. Not only has social media affected my life but also impacted with innumerable advantages and disadvantages. One of the main impacts social media had on my life is and still does is communication and socialization. Social media provides a platform for me to easily interact with anyone and everyone. With the advancement in technology, communication is easier than it has ever been before. Online communication of social media, email, and Facetime has taken over the world. Having my entire family in Poland, communication is what keeps us in touch through social media. Instead of waiting weeks to receive a letter from my family in Poland, a message through facebook is much quicker. The safety aspect is a huge aspect that deals with communication.
Social networking can be defined as “a web-based service that allow individuals to create a public profile, to create a list of users with whom to share connection, and view and cross the connections within the system." Social networks such as Facebook, Myspace, Instagram and Twitter are very common and popular among the younger generation nowadays. We can chat with another person who happens to be in another country in the fraction of seconds. Unlike the olden days, people sent letters to their loved ones and for days they waited for just a reply from their loved ones. Logging on to social networks is not just for the purpose of communicating with others, however it can be used for education or self-improvement purpose. Nowadays, social
While with the constant use of these social technologies, less people are communicating in person, this type of technology might be doing more harm than good because with the rise of websites such as Facebook, social networking may be on the verge of replacing traditional personal interactions for the next generation. Social networks were created for the sole purpose of helping individuals communicate. There are many other reasons that these technologies are used, but communication is still the number one. It is not only changing how we communicate, but how we interact with each other in daily life.
Social media has created a social problem in society and it is distorting how people are communicating with each other face to face. Social media in today’s day is seen as a worldwide antisocial epidemic amongst the younger generation and a few older adults born in the millennial. Social media is notably used more by the younger people in our society and around the world, considering that technology is more accessible and easier to use for them. This is because their generation was born into a technological and advancing society that it has adapted into modern society’s culture. Social media has become a part of today’s norm, in which people who own a smart phone have downloaded some sort of social media app in order to stay intact with family
Social media has caused a substantial decrease in face-to-face time, stopped people from working effectively, and has caused an increase in bullying. Social media as defined by dictionary.com is “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts”. People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s most popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site.
Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
The social media is one of the most common means of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each other. This essay will argue that social media has improved communication between people, and has also improved the means of communication between them.
Facebook is beneficial to one's social life because they can continuously stay in contact with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other. But some argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. Users can upload pictures, update statuses, play games, get news, add people, like and share photos, videos, memes
