At this time, I believe the greatest impact I have on the community is serving with my church every week. I volunteer in a plethora of different ways through my church. Mainly, I serve on the production team. I devote 16 hours a week and perform duties at 16 services a month. The production team includes positions such as Technical Director, Lyrics, Graphics, Director, Camera Operator, and Camera Director. Although I have had the privilege of serving almost every position the team offers, I focus on one main team, the camera team. I have the honor of leading that team each week for our Wednesday night services and our Thursday night college services. As a leader, I strive to be honest, loyal, responsible, humble, fair, kind, and respectful. I believe the first and most important action a leader should take is to serve and I try my best to serve the best interests of my team every day. Along with leading this team, I have had the opportunity to help lead outreach projects. My church is always reaching out to those in need, but once every year we have a “Serve Day” where most of the members of our church go out into the community and meet a variety of needs in surrounding neighborhoods. These service projects are not only directly helping the community, but it is quite satisfying to see the results of my efforts and know that I am making a difference in the lives of the people around me. When I am on summer break, I invest time in an additional outreach program, Summer Blast, that effects several hundred local children. I help out my family and community in several ways. I have volunteered to help coach cheerleading at Jefferson Elementary School everyday after school. I work at Mattoon Academy of Gymnastics and coach several classes and their gymnastics team. I also work in my church's nursery on Sundays. Being a role model for all of the kids I coach and take care of means a lot to me because they look up to me and want to follow in my footsteps. Even while I would always be there to provide guidance and help lead the way, I would never ask members to do something I am unwilling to do myself. Whether its picking up trash from the highway, leading groups at a CDE contest, or standing in the freezing cold to ring the Salvation Army bell, I am always willing to serve along my fellow members.
The importance of servant leadership should not be underestimated and it can be simplified and embodied in one timeless phrase: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When applied to leadership the result can be phenomenal. Those who wish to serve do so with their hearts, it is not forced nor is it with resentment. The servant leader serves out of acceptance and ownership of their ability and duty.
Another example of a time I showed leadership is when I went to the town library to read to children. Doing that made me feel good since some of them were to young to know how to read. Also, it was enjoyable to read to the children because just watching listen to you made me feel responsible and teacher-like. I show good character by helping my sister if she need help with her homework. I sit down with her and explain how to do it or if she doesn’t understand a question I explain what it means. I stop when she says she does not need my help anymore. I also show good character by sticking up for my friends if they need it or want it. My friends are one of the most important things in my life and if they need up I will gladly help them. Another example of myself showing good character is at lunch when people put their lunch trays away most people do it carelessly. So, I try my hardest to make sure the trays are in a neat pile. The lunch ladies have a hard-enough job as it is. So, I do this to make it a little easier. Examples of myself showing citizenship is when I was younger an at the time my mom worked for the Rotary Club
I am dedicated to helping out our community and school, because it warms my heart and soul. Seneca said in about 40 to 60 A.D. that you should “be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received.” In other words you should not boast about the numerous projects you have accomplished and how much physical work you executed, but rather pride yourself on how you helped people in community and school, and how you have affected their lives with positive means. I feel life is joyous and it should be the feeling everyone illustrates, and this is exactly what keeps me functioning in the stressful world today. I find comfort in helping others to make their lives a little more like heaven and this comfort motivates me to perform copious service projects to the best of my capability whenever I find the time. Time is fair to the rich, the poor, and to every race, because time is equal and gives everyone 24 hours daily to accomplish their required tasks. Because time is so valuable and I am occupied by difficult advanced placement and honor classes and juggle school, clubs, sports, and friends, I joined Key Club, a high school division of the adult service club, Kiwanis. Key Club opened new doors to make every extra minute count towards helping others.
I chose to do my service learning project at Feed My Starving Children. I chose this service learning project because I had prior knowledge and experience by doing it with my family and church. Feed My Starving Children has been a huge impact to those who have participated in this service experience because their mission is to pack meals that go to very hungry children around the world. Being from a single parent family, it is hard for us to not be concerned about where the money for food is coming from, yet we have food on our tables for everyday meals. Therefore, I can’t imagine what it is like for those who experience hunger.
I am always striving to lead others with courage and dignity. I demand others to practice what they preach and I will always support my people thru my actions and dedication to them. An old Chief Petty Officer once told me that you should always “be the Chief and not a sheep”. These words are simple to understand but are sometimes difficult to display. If we lead others with this mentality then we will build a connection to them that is nearly unbreakable by using personal power and not the positional power that will not succeed. You will have led your people the way that best suited each of them and you will have built a relationship that cherishes the values and diverse opinions that each person brings, and built valuable new leaders that will one day take your place. The most proud moments we should have is to see our people that work with and for us to succeed and pass us by

My definition of leadership would have to be a person who helps other people reach their goals. My fear of leading people in the wrong direction or not helping them reach their fullest potential is the ultimate reason why I never thought I could lead. I have always viewed leadership as severing others and helping others reach their fullest potential. I also believe that any person in a leadership role should be trustworthy. Northouse (2016), defines servant leadership as a leader who make the needs of their followers a priority while taking an interest in their advancement. The word leadership is not so scary when I view it as being of service to others. This definition of a servant leader will influence me every day in my future role as an educator to my students and diabetic patients. Another excellent point made by Northhouse (2016), is servant leaders make sure that their followers goals are achieved and give them the encouragement needed to met those goals. For instance, the students that I teach will need overwhelming support during nursing school to succeed in becoming a nurse. Diabetic patients I educate will also need the same support in order to reach their goals in becoming managers of their care. Most importantly, servant leaders allow followers to be autonomous and the power becomes shared between the leader and the follower (Northouse, 2016). Nevertheless, in order to help
A leader is someone who will work towards a goal that will benefit the group as a whole and along the way they will lead that group to accomplish that particular goal. A leader has to have passion and they need to create a vision and follow through with it until it is completed. I was selected as one of eight out of over 400 applicants to represent the church camp that I have attended summer after summer for two weeks as a high school staffer this past summer. I had to lead two large groups of campers, made up almost entirely of new camper, in a group bible study for two weeks . At first, it was difficult to get the campers to open up, but later I realized that they were trying their hardest and I needed to be patient. My goal was to lead and help them become the best person and future leader anyone could ask

I have been involved in the American Cancer Society for five years. My team, Team Hoot has raised funds for cancer as well as participating in Relay for Life each year. This year, I will be on the board committee at Relay; giving back to the survivors. This organization is one that I always promote and give back to. Also being involved in Relay for Life this year, National Honors Society is a club that helps the community. Being on the executive board, I correlate new service projects as well as corresponding with the Lee County National Honor Society chapter. Also, I am forming a new club at North Fort Myers High, Red Cross Club. Being president, Red Cross helps donates funds back to the American Red Cross. This year we are planning to donate materials for our troops as well as materials for individuals in disaster situations. Giving back to the community is very important to me.
