Managers have leadership qualities; Yet not all managers are leaders. This course has allowed me to challenge myself and learn about my strengths and weaknesses in a leadership role. Exploring the main three practices which include managing ethics and diversity, challenging the process and enabling others to act. This report is an analytical study of the leadership practices mentioned above; while exploring leadership practices, ways to improve them and new innovative ideas. Owners like managers alike, should establish ways to demonstrate appreciation for employees. This entails going beyond standards. In this section leaders look for challenging opportunities. Leaders who follow this behavior “Search for Opportunities by seizing the initiative and looking outward for innovative ways to improve” (Kouzes, J.M. & Posner, B. V. Pg.156). Through this process leaders and subordinates create ideas and take risks. On many occasions, disappointments can occur; However other challenges can be successful. If leaders do not take risks, they stay at standard pace; doing so is said to breeding mediocrity. During our LPI assessment, the questions that triggered a review of my personal skills in this process was: seeking challenging opportunities that test my skills and abilities, challenges people to try to new and innovative ways to do their work, searching outside the formal boundaries of my organization for innovative ways to improve what we do, asking-what can we learn? When things don’t go as expected, making certain that we set achievable goals by making concrete plans and establishing measurable milestones for the projects and programs that are worked on and lastly, experimenting and taking risks, even when there is a chance for failure. In, my opinion, this is probably the scariest of the five exemplary leadership practices. The unknown is always intimidating. Notably, I now understand why it’s such an important …show more content…
Everyone understands what reprimands, rules and laws have. But ethics can be simple acts of doing things or the way you treat others. “Ethics are the inner guiding moral principles, values, and beliefs that people use to analyze or interpret a situation and then decide what is the right or appropriate way to behave” (Jones, Gareth R. and George, Jennifer M. Pg.93). Just as laws change as time passes, ethical beliefs also can change. Norms can contribute to impressions on ethical and non-ethical behavior. Being a manager requires understanding ethics, especially when it comes to managing diversity. The most successful companies such as Apple, Samsung, Amazon all welcome diversity. Various viewpoints allow leaders to understand what all kinds of people from all over the world want or need. It not only helps creating marketing ideas, creating products, finding target sales markets, but it also builds leadership skills among employees. Everyone challenges themselves and continuously learns from one another. Although having diversity can create challenges, I would suggest understanding how to create an organizational structure and team building; As they both play an important role in ethics and diversity. leaders should create rules which everyone should follow. This will help avoid conflicts. Organizing teams where the member have important roles that complement each other can help
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
1. There are numerous methods, characteristics, and motives for proper leadership. In my opinion, leadership is the overall process of unifying a team toward completing a common goal. Several key people in my life influenced this definition and how I lead.
When you approach leadership with the mindset that leading involves a great deal of experimentation, a leader that understands this concept will now look at the implementation of change within the organization as nothing more than an attempt or test. This process is most effective when the leader takes more risks than normal, frequently exceeds the boundaries of their authority, instigates heated discussion by turnings up the heat on problematic issues while at the same time identifying their own personal contributions to the difficulties and
Schein in his book “Organizational Culture and Leadership” explains how different believes and behaviors start to be logical when we understand their cultures by stating “When we learn to see the world through cultural lenses, all kinds of things begin to make sense that initially were mysterious, frustrating, or seemingly stupid” (2010, p. 13). This kind of foresight should be the starting point in order to manage the tremendously growing diversity in the workforce nowadays. Leaders and administrators of both public and private organizations through their influence are responsible to promote and manage diversity in an ethical manner.

There are several ways to define leadership, but what sets effective leaders apart from commonplace managers are their extraordinary actions and the successes that result. This paper will provide an in-depth look into my personal leadership philosophy. My leadership philosophy consists of leading by example, being an approachable person, learning from others, and knowledge of your team. Throughout my life, I have worked with outstanding leaders and all of them contributed to my leadership philosophy. I believe leadership is diverse and ever evolving throughout life experience. I have witnessed one common denominator in all my great leadership and it was their ability to adapt to their followers. A leader maximizes the potential in each individual they lead. During my time as a leader, I have found leading by example, being approachable, learning from others, and knowledge of your team as vital to leadership.

In today’s complex management environment, I believe that the mindset of a manger weigh the same as their views and attitude on the job. Certainly, Jonathan Gosling an established scholar and the director of the Centre for Leadership Studies at the University of Exeter provide an excellent view on the diverse talent requirements in effective management. The main issue identified by the author is the connection between leadership and management. Separation of management and leadership is impractical. However not all good leaders are good managers and vice versa. Gosling, and Mintzberg (2003), argues that management without leadership promotes uninspired behavior, which hinders business activities. On the other hand, leadership devoid of management results in disconnect of actions and ideas. I concur with the author’s argument on the relationship between management and leadership. I believe that good managers should be good leaders too. However, most organizations do not enjoy both the benefits of effective leadership and management. In particular, most organizations lack either of these ...
Effective leaders are able to accomplish their goas by competently organizing the business and support of other people. Leaders learn to be great leaders by doing what other admirable leaders have before you. To develop ideas and chart the course of their business, leaders need to be creative. Leaders can get the work done by using their power to generate creativity and promote

Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal.
