Broken Column
Frida Kahlo did not have an easy life and was subject to many challenges that most people never have to face. At the age of six she contracted poliomyelitis, or as it is commonly known as polio, in her teenage years she was in a horrific trolley car accident and as a result Kahlo had to undergo numerous failed spinal surgeries and, ultimately, limb amputation. Another result of the horrific trolley crash Kahlo was in was the inability to have children, which affected Kahlo tremendously and was seen in many of her paintings. Later on in life she went through a divorce with her mentor and husband, Diego Rivera, which caused emotional suffering. Frida Kahlo had an extremely hard life and

Kahlo also feeling like the only thing holding her together is the many failed surgeries she was put through. The many failed spinal surgeries and fusions left Kahlo feeling as if she is just composed of broken pieces that are barely holding together. All the nails scattered throughout her body represent the pain she feels every day and her inability to escape from it because it has become part of her. The barren background canvas Kahlo’s inability to have children while the dark sky represents the dark and heartbroken feeling she has because of her inability to start a family. The colors set the painting up to have a darker tone because they are not very vibrant and do not convey positive emotions. Overall, The Broken Column is a representation of the inner pain Kahlo felt through her life, both internally and

Wayne, transforms this painting into a three dimensional abstract piece of art. The focal point of the painting are the figures that look like letters and numbers that are in the front of the piece of art. This is where your eyes expend more time, also sometimes forgiving the background. The way the artist is trying to present this piece is showing happiness, excitement, and dreams. Happiness because he transmits with the bright colours. After probably 15 minutes on front of the painting I can feel that the artist tries to show his happiness, but in serene calm. The excitement that he presents with the letters, numbers and figures is a signal that he feels anxious about what the future is going to bring. Also in the way that the colors in the background are present he is showing that no matter how dark our day can be always will be light to

At the time, Coyoacán was a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City. Kahlo contracted polio at age six, which left her right leg thinner than the left; she disguised this later in life by wearing long skirts or trousers. To help her regain her strength, her father encouraged her to exercise and play sports. She took up bicycling, roller skating, swimming, boxing, and wrestling, despite the fact that many of these activities were then reserved for boys. It has been conjectured that she was born with spina bifida, a congenital condition that could have affected both spinal and
In this painting, The Broken Column, Frida expressed her pain and suffering in a most straight forward way. At the age of eighteen she was involved in a serious bus accident, which her life was marked by chronic pain and health problems. She was born in July 6th 1907 to a Mexican Roman Catholic mother who was of Indian and Spanish decent and a German photographer father. Frida had three sisters, Mitilde and Adriana, who were older and Christina who was younger. She learned about Mexican history, art and architecture by looking at her father’s photography. In Ursula Le Guin’s The Dispossessed, the rival societies of Urras and Anarres are structural opposites. In capitalist Urras, there is private property, a system of currency, and a class system permeated with inequalities while on Anarres (founded on the principles of anarcho-communism), possession of land is abolished and the idea of “mutual aid and solidarity” (Le Guin X) rules over any form of self-indulgence. These dissimilarities extend past the sphere of administrative policies into the domain of social relations. Most significantly, Urras and Anarres hold contradicting stances on the controversial topic of gender equality. In Urras, women are deemed as the physically and intellectually inferior sex and lead monotonous lives as housekeepers

...ant place for her artistically. The tragic events that happened to her in the United States changed the way she view the US. In Kahlo’s self-portrait she depicts the United States as void of life, and full of machines. The floodlights, microphone and generator in the foreground make it seem to be dangerous. And the factory with the word ‘FORD’ could not be forgotten, as it was part of a major event in her life.
The turmoil began early for this young woman. At age six, she was stricken with polio, which left her walking with a limp. From the beginning Kahlo did not intend to become an artist. She was attending school at The Preparatoria (Preparatory) to become a famous doctor (Frida Kahlo n.d.). It was on September 17, 1925 that the most pivotal moment in her life occurred. Kahlo was on her way home from school when she became involved in a tragic bus accident. She was discovered by her boyfriend at the time, Alejandro Gomez Avais. Her slender body had been pierced by a hand rail (Lucie-Smith 1999). Many, including doctors, thought she wouldn’t make it. She proved wrong after surviving various surgeries. For a year she was put in bed to recuperate. The accident left her with a broken back, broken pelvis, and a crushed leg. During her recuperation she taught herself she taught herself to paint by studying Italian Renaissance (Frida Kahlo n.d.). She began painting portraits of family members and still life from her bed.
One of the many symbols that Picasso used was an anguished mother with a dead child. On the far left of the painting, we can see that a woman’s head is being thrown back and her mouth is wide open, as if she is screaming out on the top of her lungs while holding onto the body of a small, limp child. Perhaps she was a mother who was crying out in pain and despair over the her dead child in her arms. Her eyes, nose and lips were drawn in the shape of tears which may symbolize how much distress she was feeling after she realized that her child became a victim of the
...her face, and instead the viewer finds it in complex symbolism. She has said that “I paint whatever passes through my head without any consideration”, but this is not quite true as it is obvious that her works have been extremely thought-out and are all very complex. Kahlo’s self-portraits are often categorised as “expressionist” portraits. This is when an artwork depicts emotional experiences rather than reality. However, Kahlo’s works are more of a mixture between expressionism and realism, because they emphasise emotional experiences and physical experiences.
Elements in her art are very expressive, there's a complete understanding of the anatomy where lines are able to become powerfully abstract in a unique way. The use of black and white is common in the majority of Kathe Kollwitz art, and like this one she uses the dark and light to emphasize emotion. The expression on the woman’s face is neutral, yet there seems to be more of a sad feeling in the portrait. The subject matter is not looking straightforward and she has dark under eye circles that show how tired she is.
I believe it is emotionally because of the factthat she doesn’t see herself in good light. I feel like with this painting Picasso has iterated athousand meanings, different for anyone who looks at it. Towards the end of Picasso’s life his art output never slowed down. He continuedreleasing art until his death in 1973, where he died at the age of 91. The amount of art releasedby him throughout his career is enormous, he created over 13,500 paintings and over 150,000illustrations and engravings.
