Frida Kahlo
The feminist icon, Frida Kahlo , was known as a Mexican self-portrait artist. One of Kahlo’s famous quotes is, “ I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.” This quote demonstrates the meaning and drive behind her work. Frida Kahlo was an important figure in history because of her art and how each piece told it’s own story.
Frida Kahlo was born on July 6,1907 in Coyocoán, Mexico. Frida and her 6 siblings grew up in the house she was born in, which later became known as Casa Azul.(“Frida Kahlo Biograhy.com”,2017) Her father, Wilhelm, was a German Photographer who came to Mexico where he met and married Frida’s mother, Matilde. Around the age of 6 she contracted polio, which caused her to be bedridden for nine months. When she did recover from the illness she walked with a limp because the illness had damaged her right leg and foot. Her father encouraged her to go swimming, to play soccer, and to wrestle to help with her recovery. After being diagnosed with gangrene in her right foot, she spent nine months in the hospital and received many operations. Having limited mobility, Frida still painted and supported political causes. In 1953 Kahlo received her first solo exhibition in Mexico; by this time she was completely bedridden, but that did not stop her she arrived by ambulance. A few months later her leg was amputated to stop the gangrene from spreading. Then in 1954 Frida became even deeply depressed because she was hospitalized again, some reports even said she tried to commit suicide; two months later she returned to the hospital with bronchial pneumonia. No matter her condition she still persevered, she gave her final appearance was July 2. On July 13, about a week from her 47th birthday, Kahlo died in her famous blue
