Frida Kahlo was an amazing woman whose many tragedies influenced her to put her stories into her paintings. She was born in July 6th 1907 to a Mexican Roman Catholic mother who was of Indian and Spanish decent and a German photographer father. Frida had three sisters, Mitilde and Adriana, who were older and Christina who was younger. She learned about Mexican history, art and architecture by looking at her father’s photography. When Frida was six she got polio and it was a long time before she would heal completely. After surviving polio, Frida’s right leg became weak and thin, so her father encouraged her to play sports to help her.
Frida was a very smart girl even though she missed a lots of school due to the polio. She had a photographic memory and learned to speak Spanish, English, and German. She was so smart her parents enrolled her in the National Preparatory School in Mexico City. This was where she would eventually meet Diego Rivera who was famous for his murals. Frida would watch him work on his mural at her school.
After school one day in September she took a bus home from Mexico City to Coyoacin. This is the day that would change her life forever. The bus she was on was hit by a street car and the bus was crushed. One of the arm rails from the bus seat went through Frida’s hip and out her genitals. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance and doctors did not think she would survive. Frida’s spinal column and many other bones were broken and smashed. She was no longer able to go to school to be a doctor since the accident left her as an invalid. She was to stay in the hospital for a month in a full body cast. When Frida finally went home to heal, she was still in the full body cast. Unfortunately, her bones woul...

...1953 it was. Frida was told that she was not healthy enough to go to the exhibition, but she had none of that. She had her bed taken to the gallery and traveled by ambulance to get there. She kept painting after the exhibit and in July 1954, Frida passed away from health issues. Her paintings remain beautiful pieces of work to this day.
Frida was an amazing artist and courageous women. Through all the heartaches and tragedies she went through during her life, she managed to stay strong and follow her dreams of being a well know artist and painter. She was a beautiful and incredible artist with such creativity and heart. To see such raw emotion come from someone who went through hell and back, she remained true to herself. I wish I had half the passion she did for life.

Ester Hernandez is a Chicana artist, best known for her works of Chicana women. Ester’s goal is to recreate women’s lives to produce positive images of women’s lifestyle and to create icons. Her piece, Frida y Yo, contains the iconic painter Frida Kahlo. Frida, after being in multiple accidents causing long-term pain and suffering, began painting, mostly self-portraits, to portray her reality and glorify the pain. Similar to how Hernandez's goals are a juxtaposition to Frida’s artwork, the art piece Frida y Yo creates a juxtaposition between life and suffering and death and fortune.
This had symbolized Frida wanting to be freedom from all that she had suffered from mentally and physically. This painting had only been finished eight days before Friday died of health problems. Which in fact her husband Diego Rivera had died from health problems too, and he had also painted a watermelon portrait. This is connected with the poem Wedding Portrait, because the relationship between Frida and Diego are being relived through the speaker in the poem. In the poem the husband talks about how his wife is having problems with her health and how he wonders what it feels like for her. Also he tries to do his best on making her happy, by massaging her feet and would sit on the porch with
Block and Hoffman-Jeep’s journal article served as the inspiration for the thesis concerning Frida Kahlo’s fashion and persona as opposed to the one crafter by mass media, imperialist magazine producers. Due to the in depth analysis of photos taken of Frida through the 1930s, and analysis of her paintings which portray Frida between America and Mexico shows the influential imaginary wall between American culture and Mexican Culture; and the divergence in historic paths. While Mexican politics have experienced a large amount of turmoil throughout history, Frida was

At the time, Coyoacán was a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City. Kahlo contracted polio at age six, which left her right leg thinner than the left; she disguised this later in life by wearing long skirts or trousers. To help her regain her strength, her father encouraged her to exercise and play sports. She took up bicycling, roller skating, swimming, boxing, and wrestling, despite the fact that many of these activities were then reserved for boys. It has been conjectured that she was born with spina bifida, a congenital condition that could have affected both spinal and
Both Frida and Diego had affairs and a lot of the damage that Diego inflicted on Frida emotionally went straight to her paintings
As an artist? She was respected for her work, but the fact that she didn’t seem like or acted like an artist, & using canvases that is what she ‘lacked’ in respect, & for a while no-one really seemed to care, but then she met Diego Rivera.
It is no wonder that Picasso, with his revolutionary style of painting, would be attracted to Gertrude Stein’s crowded Rue de Fleurus apartment on Saturday evenings for intellectual discussions on art and literature. From the barefoot dances and improvisational plays of Max Jacob to the comments of critics and would-be art patrons like Maurice Raynal and André Salmon, this salon was an assortment of artists, bohemians, professionals, and foreigners (Myers 18; Olivier 139). The beginnings of a marvelous relationship sparked betwixt the words of aversion and praise that filled the halls of the Steins’ extravagant home.
Cindy Sherman and Frida Kahlo were pioneers when it came to artistic creativity and relating to femininity. Without these two female self-portraiture artists, art wouldn’t be what it is today. They had definite differences when it came to their style, but in the end when it came to the purpose they both wanted to use stylistic conventions during their time and they also wanted to change those conventions. Whether it was the background or the character portrayed they have their own defined style and that makes these two women memorable artists.

Born in 1910, Frida was a woman that was not about preserving young beauty. She loved to acquaint herself with Mexico, where she was born. Being a great painter, she loved to paint pictures of herself. A quote by her is as follows “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best”. In other words, she can paint and feel free, because she knows herself well and can paint the
Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait (Figure 1), which I encountered by chance at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, left a significant impression on me. At the time, I did not know her right leg was crippled by polio; I was uninterested in her. I eventually learned of her fate while I was searching for artists with disabilities on the internet as I was preparing data on my Capstone, ‘An Art Gallery for the individuals with disabilities.’ I made my mind to change the subject of my Capstone into ‘Frida Kahlo,’ as I wanted to know more of her unique paintings and suffering-filled life. In this work, I will discuss the two categories of her artistic techniques and oeuvres. The former is classified into her suffering-filled life and ruthless love, whereas the

The tragic event left Kahlo in a world of unbearable pain and also boredom. It was during her bed-ridden recovery where she took up the practice of painting, with herself as the subject. Her mother had made her an easel to paint in bed, where she developed her skills of painting. Her first self portrait, “Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress”, was her first serious piece which she painted in 1926. She painted it as a present to her boyfriend, Alejandro Gomez Arias. The artwork was fairly muted in colour and was quite a traditional European-style artwork. But, as Kahlo continued painting her works transitioned from the acade...
