Introduction
Throughout history different artists have practiced the art of portraiture. These are expressed in different ways due to the different time periods, history and cultural backgrounds. These artists ‘Frida Kahlo’ and ‘Pablo Picasso have shown the art of portraits as there know way.
Frida Kahlo – (1907-1954)
Born July 6, 1097, in Coyocoan, Mexico City, Mexico. Considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo began painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident.

In this painting, The Broken Column, Frida expressed her pain and suffering in a most straight forward way. At the age of eighteen she was involved in a serious bus accident, which her life was marked by chronic pain and health problems. The broken column was painted shortly after her unwanted spinal surgery. The metal nails displayed in Frida Kahlo’s upper body and is hidden behind a cloth. Tears streaming down her fac.. During this time, the artist was sympathetic to this experiences of the poor and witnessing it. This work was created in Madrid, and the distorted style, the upper body of the guitarist seems to be reclining, while the bottom half appears to be sitting cross legged.
This bent and sightless man holds close to him a large, rounded guitar. Its brown body represents the painting’s only shift in color. Both physically and symbolically, the instrument fills the space around the solitary figure, who seems oblivious to his blindness and poverty as he plays. The thin, skeleton like figure of the blind musician also has roots in art from Picasso’s native country, Spain.
The man’s eyes are closed and his mouth is slightly open. The colours of the painting shades of blue, and there is a flatness to the painting. The only break in color is the brown guitar. Like other paintings at this time, the mas is assumed to be poor. There is an overall sense of depression and tragedy.
