Pablo Picasso is well renowned as an artist who adapted his style based on the changing currents of the artistic world. He worked in a variety of styles in an effort to continually experiment with the effects and methods of painting. This experimentation led him to the realm of cubism where Picasso worked on creating forms out of various shapes. We are introduced to Picasso’s nonrepresentational art through the advent of the cubist style of painting. During his time working on this style, Picasso developed the painting Woman in the Studio. A painting created late in Picasso’s artistic career, this painting displays many of the characteristics common in cubism. The painting’s title serves as a description of the painting and explains the scenario depicted by Pablo Picasso. In analyzing this work, it is important to observe the subject matter, understand the formal elements of the painting, and attempt to evoke and comprehend the emotions represented in the painting. Woman in a Studio is a paragon of Picasso’s adaptive work that blends many different styles of art. In this particular work, Picasso combines the elements of analytical and synthetic cubism in order to develop a work that develops a figure resembling a woman. In this painting, Picasso depicts a woman with whom he has a connection. Through the utilization of geometric shapes and a monochromatic color scheme, Picasso creates an environment that forces the audience to thoroughly analyze the work in order to develop a complete understanding of the woman depicted in the painting. Through an analysis of the subject matter, the elements of the painting, and the emotions evoked by the painting, we are able to thoroughly analyze Woman in the Studio and understand its meaning and its presentation as a cubist work.

Picasso, unlike most painters, is even more special because he did not confine himself to canvas, but also produced sculpture, poetry, and ceramics in profusion. Although much is known about this genius, there is still a lust after more knowledge concerning Picasso, his life and the creative forces that motivated him. This information can be obtained only through a careful study of the events that played out during his lifetime and the ways in which they manifested themselves in his creations (Penrose).

Pablo Picasso is certainly a genius who has left an indelible mark on his time. Consequently, many artists all over the world have had their own career influenced by his work. Among those artists can be listed Willem de Kooning, a Dutch American painter, and the Cameroonian artist Koko Komegne. For instance, both artists have had their early work, and later their career impacted by Picasso’s cubism. While de Kooning spent hours looking at each detail of Picasso’s paintings, Koko Komegne learnt to paint by reproducing the master’s artworks. Another thing both artists shared with Picasso through their career was the woman as subject matter. Unsurprisingly, de Kooning and Komegne have extensively painted the woman in their own career. Among all those pieces, Seated Woman, 1940, from Willem de Kooning and Toilette, 2006, from Koko Komegne are very similar; the characters on both pieces are ladies, and they have the same pose. However, although the two paintings are similar in term of descriptive subject matter, de Kooning and Komegne draw from their environment and their personal style to highlight their specificities.

The bright colors used in the sun draws a viewer in, but the astonishment, fascination, and emotion depicted in the expression on the young woman keeps them intrigued in the painting. Picasso's Portrait of Gertrude Stein is a haunting and pensive work, imbued with a great sense of mystery and pondering. Stein's gaze is cast to the side, her hands in a gestural position, leaning forward with her chin tilted and lips slightly parted. It is as if she is about to speak and through the body language of her portrait, we envision an ensuing scene where she articulates what she's been thinking, elaborating with her hands. The essence of Stein's character is embodied in this posture and gesture, the truth of her being in this physical representation. Knowing nothing of Stein, one would at once understand that this woman is a thinker carefully considering her points and that this intellectual characterization is of fundamental importance to her mode of being.

Synthetic cubism is defined as building a figure or object up into something that is created using both arbitrary colors and geometric shapes. Picasso was known for painting in this style to also show more emotion and give us as viewers a multiple perspective look. The emotion seen in this painting is done by his use of sharp geometric shapes around the eyes and mouth to emphasize the fear and sadness seen in the women’s face. These traits fit in with the cubism movement because of how they are essential when creating a cubism painting. The cultural context in which the painting is associated with ties into WWII. After a bombing of the northern Spanish territory of Basque, Picasso, originally from this region, felt devastated after hearing of this news. As a result he began to create a series of paintings that expressed his feelings towards this event. Many of the paintings in this series highlighted the gruesomeness of war whether it be by showing off a burning house that ignites the city or a soldier with blown off body parts laying down in the street. His painting the Weeping Woman derives from this series which was used to show the pain and fear of these people during this time of civil war. The model used for most of the paintings that were created in the series was Dora Maar. Illustrated with graphite pencil, the overall piece conveys a perceivably soft and partially messy finish, however this is simply due to the piece’s assumed purpose as a preparatory sketch for a painting. The most refined element of the piece is the subject’s face, in which Degas has used parallel lines of differing tonal value to show the three-dimensional quality of the subject’s facial structure. To softly define the subject’s facial features against this tonal value, Degas used comparatively more intricate and purposeful lines to define the subject’s complacent gaze. Juxtaposing this detail, loose freehand lines are used to illustrate the texture of the garment worn by the woman featured. The way the material falls and creases is also conveyed by the shifting direction of, and varying distance between lines within the subject’s dress.
