Identify: Again, I had difficulty selecting which piece to use for my second piece. Ultimately I selected Temptation, 1880 William-Adolphe Bouguereau. The dimensions are 39x52 inches and is oil on canvas. Describe: This is a beautiful painting of a women and young relaxing outdoors. It appears to be a French countryside as you can see on the right side of the painting endless trees and grass with mountains in the back ground. The mother and child are sitting near a pond. The body position is casual and they are also facing each other. They appear to be communicating with their eyes. The child reminds me of an angel or cherub. Formal Analysis: The visual elements in this painting are shape, color and light. The shapes and contours of the mother and child are life like. …show more content…

The focal point of being the mother and appear to be true to size. In comparison, the apple, the trees and landscape in the in the distance are all represented to be true to size based on this perspective. The women being bare foot along with the child who is naked provides unity to painting as they are part of the natural landscape. All of this, gives the viewer the impression that this is a realistic picture. Interpretation: Subject: Our docent, Mary, shared with us that this artist loved to paint the human body and was well known for his painting of the human body and skin. This piece certainly highlights those skills. The colors of the hair and skin are incredibly life like. Original Purpose: This is a landscape painting. It appears to have a biblical meaning based its title Temptation in addition to the innocent child and the apple being the object of temptation. Contextual Theory: This painting depicts a portrait of life during the late 1800’s. The women’s clothing and hair style represent that era.
