Have you ever been someplace where everyone is just, in a way, there? And honestly, they don’t hold any important value; they are just a bunch of people along you going someplace, but have never really examined your situation and cared. Lily Furedi, unlike most people, takes a minute to examine her situation and look at her surroundings in a public use of transportation. She is the artist of the painting known as “Subway” where she freezes time in a subway to become aware of her surroundings. One can analyze how it was made through the visual elements, history that took place within the artist’s life, the artist or time era of a piece, or through how the artist expressed their daily emotions through the masterpiece. Individuals can formally analyze Furedi’s work by recognizing elements and principles of art used in the masterpiece. As many people on the subway isolate themselves or hideaway behind newspaper or simply fall asleep, this artist boldly did the opposite by “gazing down the car at her fellow passengers” which was very uncommon during this time period (“Search”). As emphasis was discussed earlier, she emphasizes the man in black carrying the instrument because she relates to him as she looks down the long subway. Furedi identifies “with such a New York musician because her father, Samuel Furedi, was a professional cellist” (“Search”). By thoroughly examining her painting, individuals are able to see what is behind all the paint. Not literally, but people are able to take a look into Furedi’s time period and process his state of mind during the time of this masterpiece.
