Sugar, known for its delicious sweetness, has negatively impacted the lives of many people. The body relies on sugar, to a certain extent, of course, to function; however, consuming sugar in excess can quickly turn the delectable sweet into a deadly killer. This common household item, has never received an association with other drug groups, but recent discoveries suggest that maybe it should. Drugs, known to cause health problems, often result in addiction. Many drugs present themselves in the form of a refined powder. Harvested from the coca plant, cocaine does not actually become deadly until after it finds itself in a refined state. The National Center for Biotechnology Information wrote an article on the evidence of sugar addiction. In this journal the team defined sugar as a “psychological dependence… not just a physical dependence”. For example, a stressful day at work could lead to eating a pint of ice cream upon arriving at home; not because of hunger, but simply because of the satisfying taste and the reward felt upon eating something sweet. According to Laura Schmidt’s speech, entitled “Why We Can’t Stop Eating Unhealthy Foods”, “Food corporations hire scientists to engineer the most irresistible habit-forming foods. Sugar is currently their go-to ingredient.” In fact, research has found that sugar far more transcends in the quality of addictiveness than cocaine. Sugar not only surpasses the level of addictiveness than that of cocaine, but it also holds a household name and does not hold a taboo reputation. Nearly everyone consumes sugar on a regular basis. Sweets have a presence in the checkout aisle at the grocery store, at athletic events, and at the gas station. Additionally they require little more than a dollar spent to find their way into the hands of an unsuspecting person. Purposefully consuming sugar in such high quantities can cause extensive damage to the body and result in a shortened lifespan. However, people need sugar in their diet to help create energy and thrive. Only when this glutinous manner of consumption occurs does the problem begin. This manner of consumption has a definition, addiction. Sugar addiction opens an uncountable amount of doors within the body. Addiction begins and causes the other problems that arise from sugar, such as, obesity, obese related diseases, and a weakened immune system. With such an obsession with sweet foods, there is an obvious desire for an explanation of how such a once unknown substance took center stage on everybody's snack, dessert, and candy list. That's where Sidney W. Mintz comes into play. He decided to write this book Sweetness and Power, and from the looks of all the sources he used to substantiate his ideas and data, it seems that he is not the first person to find the role that sugar plays in modern society important. By analyzing who Mintz's audience is meant to be, what goals he has in writing this book, what structure his book incorporates, what type, or types, of history he represents within the book, what kind of sources he uses, and what important information and conclusions he presents, we can come to better understand Mintz's views and research of the role of sugar in history, and how much it really affects our lives as we know them.

In the documentary “Fed Up,” sugar is responsible for Americas rising obesity rate, which is happening even with the great stress that is set on exercise and portion control for those who are overweight. Fed Up is a film directed by Stephanie Soechtig, with Executive Producers Katie Couric and Laurie David. The filmmaker’s intent is mainly to inform people of the dangers of too much sugar, but it also talks about the fat’s in our diets and the food corporation shadiness. The filmmaker wants to educate the country on the effects of a poor diet and to open eyes to the obesity catastrophe in the United States. The main debate used is that sugar is the direct matter of obesity. Overall, I don’t believe the filmmaker’s debate was successful.

Instead, just look over your decisions that put you in trouble towards your diet. One thing that I came across during this research paper was by a man named Jeffrey Rossman, who has his Ph.D., his words towards this topic was to be kind to yourself. To end the struggle with sugar, learn to nourish your body well and respond compassionately to your own feelings. The best sugar substitute is genuine self-acceptance. By learning more on the problems we Americans face by consuming too much sugar, I have made myself more aware on self-decisions towards my eating habits. Many people avoided the use of crack because of the harmful chemicals used in creating the drug. Carroll (2000) states cocaine is the most powerful stimulant of natural origin. Most users snort or inject the drug to enable a quicker “high.” Cocaine use brings on many health problems.
