If anyone wants something bad enough, there will always be a way to obtain it. One intriguing case of perseverance lies in the story of Poon Lim, who survived 133 days lost at sea; one of the longest times anyone had survived being lost at sea. During the time of World War II, Lim worked as a steward on the SS Benlomond, but the ship sank into the sea after it had been hit by a German torpedo. Lim ended up being the only survivor and spent his time adrift at sea with only limited supplies and his wits to help him survive. Nevertheless, how did one man survive at sea on a small raft alone from the time before Thanksgiving until after St. Patrick’s Day? Lim lived because he powered through his troubles and hardships. Lim luckily yet persistently found a raft with supplies, set up a rain catcher for water, made a fishing line for food, and survived everything that the world threw at him. If Lim just decided to drown due to a sense of hopelessness, fundamentally speaking, the entire course of history would have changed, and he would not have become what people remember of him now if he did not persevere. “The good guy always wins” is a phrase we often hear growing up. Parents reassure their kids that the hero will win despite the trials he encounters. Joseph Campbell, who coined the term “monomyth”, identifies these trials as a part of a pattern in the hero’s journey. This pattern consists of separation, initiation, and return. Osmosis Jones goes through this pattern with only a few pieces missing. The hero in this story teaches others that giving up is not an option. One must have perseverance to complete a goal, in this case, to save Frank. The journey that Jones takes to help him get through the monomyth helps develop the theme of perseverance because he never gives up on what he wants.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines perseverance as the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. In today’s society, there are so many walls and barriers that prevent humans from achieving their dreams and goals and people begin giving up. I turn to meet the box of color that displayed the game I love to play. I thought to myself, “Did I practice enough? How should I play this out? I absolutely have to win!” As these thoughts raced through my mind, I give my opponent a good luck, and press start. “3, 2, 1, Go!” Suddenly, the fictional characters displayed come to life and all of my concentration switches to this game. Determination takes control over me, and the only word I can think of is “Win.” Gaming is a passion that I have had ever since I was young. The competitiveness of it is what
