Perseverance in Life's Harsh Realities: A Comparative Study

Many people encounter perseverance throughout their life in certain events. Buck from the Call of the Wild, is taken from a place like home to him and thrown into a harsh environment he is not used to. Similar to that, my mom was living a normal life when suddenly she had to stay strong for the family due to her brother near death from a tragic wreck. Even though they differ, both had to adapt to the life changing experiences and stay mentally strong.

From Call of the Wild, Buck encounters perseverance a lot throughout the story. In the beginning, Buck has to adapt and get used to the cruel environment he is forced into. As everyone would do, Buck reacts badly and when this happens his actions are seen by a man with a club. When Buck gets beat for his actions he learns the law of the club and knows to respect men that give him orders. As tragic as that is Buck is

faced with many more events and has to overcome him not getting the respect in the camp. True savageness shows by him finally when he kills spitz (the leading dog) and earns the leader position. Towards the end Buck comes home to his camp one day and sees that his favorite owner as well as the whole camp had been slaughtered by a tribe named the Yeehats. This leaves Buck without an owner and he has no choice but answer the call of the wild and go into the woods where he will meet his pack.

Different from Buck, My mother had to stay strong as an adult for the whole family because of the horrifying experience her family was going through.

In the result of her brother and father near death from a car wreck, my mother had to stay strong for all the siblings and family. The grief across the family was already bad enough and it wouldn’t have gotten better if it wasn’t for my mom getting mentally strong for everybody and keeping hope. It ended up her dad being fine but as for her brother it would've been a miracle if he lived due to the accident. After his rehabilitation and him getting better the family felt great but no one thought it could’ve gotten worse. Since the car was smashed her brothers head and left him with brain problems, Charles (her brother) forgot who the family was. The doctor and the whole family went through a long process of teaching Charles who they were. Eventually he remembered everything except for everything that had happened 2 years before the car crash. This was an experience that the family was not ready for at all and luckily my mom stayed strong for

everybody.

As it seems my mother and Buck differ in extremity in their events, they both had to stay mentally strong and have hope throughout their life changing experiences. Buck was used to a warm home as well as my mom but these experiences changed how they acted and who they were. My mom from this experience makes her more cautious about driving and now knows she has to be the one to stay strong if no one will. On the other hand Buck was thrown through many events but it all led up to him having to finally go to the wild where he belongs with other wolves.

No matter who you are everybody will encounter an event where they have to persevere through. Although Buck is a dog he still had to persevere through his tragic event as well as my mom did too. Even though they differ in extremity, they wouldn't have been able to get past their events if they didn't persevere in the way they did.
