People often mistake it for just “never giving up”, but this is much more, almost a superpower. Perseverance is not just the optimisty of dreamers it’s knowing how to live, even when you’d rather be dead.

Anne Frank is a perfect example of perseverance. Raised as prey and caught in crossfire, she kept her guard up and made a life for herself. Trapped in the attic like a lost hoard of house mice, her and her makeshift family lived cramped together. While the other moped, she never lost sight of what she wanted, she never gave up hope. Anne could have given up, could

have lost herself in the cluttered attic, but instead she did what she wanted. She wrote everything down, all the war and violence, and now even in her death, she is what she’s always wanted to be, a writer.

Nick Vujicic, the boy with no limbs. Born an outcast, a freak, Nick couldn’t catch a break. He felt useless and depressed so alone in the world. So nick realised he didn’t need to touch the world with his hands to change it, he could change the people through words. Through many speeches and lectures, Nick slowly became the face of love and acceptance. Nick kept a smile on his face and confidence in his heart to achieve his dreams even when the world laughed in his face.

Elvis Presley grew up in a small, two bedroom home, with his parents. His twin brother was stillborn leaving Elvis an only child. Growing up in the poor side of town, Elvis presley never thought he’d amount to anything. Later on, he received a guitar for his 11th birthday. Nobody can just pick up a guitar and sound amazing, that just common sense, so through patience and time, lots of time, Elvis became the King of rock from humble beginnings.

Having faith and confidence in yourself even when no one else does is having perseverance. When everyone laughs at your dreams and you laugh at them, smashing expectations, and laughing in the face of you diversities, is the best way to follow your dreams. Having perseverance can be the difference in having a dream and living one.
