“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did”- (Gingrich). In order for a person to be successful, he or she needs to persevere the conflicts. Perseverance is defined as the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult. Through the plot of the texts, a theme of perseverance was addressed to the audience. The authors of the literature utilized facts and details to communicate a moral of perseverance. The setting of the story developed a message of perseverance as well. In the novel, Speak and the two ancillary texts, “The Third and Final Continent” and “The Resilience of Art,” a common theme of perseverance was developed through the plot, facts and details, and the setting. Melinda and Jhumpa had to persevere in order to continue on with their lives. In Speak, Melinda tried ignoring the distasteful comments by relaxing with the time she has to herself in school. Melinda explains, “My closet is a good thing, a quiet place that helps me hold these thoughts inside where no one can hear them” (Halse Anderson 51). During the story, Mel discovered a janitor’s closet where she visited to help persevere her school experience throughout the day. In the closet, Mel was alone, allowing her to rest her thoughts to continue on with the day. “The Third and Final Continent” contributes the theme of perseverance through the plot as well. Jhumpa is foreign to the United States with no job at this time. With little to afford, Jhumpa claims “I ate cornflakes and milk morning and night, and bought some bananas for variety, slicing them into the bowl with the edge of my spoon” (Lahiri).
