In the story, A Long Walk to Waters, written by Linda Sue Park, the readers are introduced to many different individuals that were able to survive challenging environments. Those individuals used those factors, perseverance, cooperation, and independence. Those factors have allowed individuals to make it past through the harsh environments throughout their journey. Perseverance shows how those individuals kept on going without giving up. Meanwhile, cooperation represents how struggling individuals are able to work together in order to achieve their goal. Last but not least independence shows how individuals can conquer a hurdle by him or herself. continuing there is evidence to show how this statement is proven correct. The main protagonist, Salva, who was on the very verge of giving up came to his sense and thought, “I need to get through the rest of this day. This day and no other.”(73) With that thought it allows Salva to continue with his journey rather than giving up. Another example given would be, “One step at a time… one day at a time. Just today- just this day to get through…”(82) An inspirational quote that allowed Salva to walk through the harsh conditions of the desert making it for to the refugee camp. Adding on, another part of the story shows Salva persevering, “Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong and I will prove it.”(66) That moment represents that Salva may have been pushed down by all of those cruel words of being weak and not being able to do anything. He still continues going, proving that they are wrong. Perseverance is a very important factor once again, plus it supported the main protagonist through harsh times. Cooperation is another survival factor that helped individuals. One example is, “The crew drove the pond and back several times a day. The pond water was piped into what look like a giant plastic bag, a bag big enough to fill the entire bed of the truck.”(76) This shows how the people and the volunteered work together helping one another to get clear water. Additionally, another example would be, “When the smaller boys grew too tired to walk, the older boys took turns carrying them on their backs.”(81) The boys are helping one another throughout their long journey, showing that they are going together as a team making sure there is no one left behind. Finally, another example would be, “The clangor of machinery and hammer greeted Nya each time she returned from the pond-unfamiliar noises that mingled with the voices of men shouting and women singing. It was the sound of people working hard together. But it did not sound of people working hard together.”(71) The workers and the people of the Nuer tribe are working together to find clearer water once again. Cooperation allows individuals to work together, whereas they are able to manage to pass through the harsh environments. Lastly, Independence is important survival factor that helped individuals survive challenging environments.
For instance, “Uncle had helped him get through the desert that way, bit by bit, one step at the time. Perhaps… perhaps Salva could get through life at camp.”(72) This shows that Salva is going to walk to the refugee camp with all the strength he has without the help of his uncle who has been supporting him all the way. In addition, another example would be, “Nya’s job at the lake camp was the same as home: to fetch water. With her hands, she would dig, a hole in the damp clay of lakebed. She kept digging, scooping out handfuls of clay until the hole was as deep as her own. The clay got wetter as she dug, until, at last water began to seep into the bottom of the hole.”(26-27) Nya goes on her own to fetch water each day, she keeps on going without help. Even though she struggles Nya manages to past that hurdle all on her own, this represents that Nya is being independent in the story. To conclude with the last piece of evidence, “All those eyes looking at him… but every face interested in what he had to say. It was the same here. The audience had come to school cafeteria because they wanted to hear him. Thinking of that made him feel a little better, and he spoke into the mike again.” The passage represents Salva being able to go up in an audience all by himself and speaking up towards the people who have came to the school cafeteria to hear him. Independence allows the two main protagonists, Salva and Nya, to go off on their own with the experience there have gone through giving them to do whatever all by
themself.

“All of the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me.” Walt Disney. The books A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a fictional book, and Iqbal a fictional book, share the same theory. This novel also includes a fictional story of Nya, a little girl that can’t go to school, because she has to walk to the water well twice a day, taking up most of the day. In each book, the characters grow stronger because of a cultural conflict. Cultural conflicts can force people to become stronger.
These timeless tales relate a message that readers throughout the ages can understand and relate to. While each of these tales is not exactly alike, they do share a common core of events. Some event and or character flaw necessitates a journey of some kind, whether it is an actual physical journey or a metaphorical one. The hardships and obstacles encountered on said journey lead to spiritual growth and build character. Rarely does a person find himself unchanged once the journey is over.
A journey is the act of travelling from one place to another. Physical journeys in particular involve this simple process, though a physical journey includes more than just movement. Also involved are the challenges and obstacles which face the traveller emotionally. The adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written by Mark Twain, and Ahn Do’s memoir, The Happiest Refugee, both exhibit this concept of an underlying journey that lays the fundamental bulding blocks of characters. These two texts offer an insight of the emotional side of a journey.
The theme of this novel centers around survival and the will to survive, as the stranded Pi fights for his will to carry on and survive alone on a lifeboat with animals.
Every single person on this experience hardships and uses perseverance to overcome it. Linda Sue Park writes a historical fiction called A Long Walk to Water, which depicts how the quality of perseverance can lead a person to achieve their goal despite difficult circumstances. Park’s story of Salva Dut and the Lost Boys of Sudan demonstrates how these young men used perseverance to complete their quest for safety despite walking thousands of miles and being near-starvation.
Sometimes there are hurdles in life that require great courage to overcome. We must utilize our inner strengths to motivate these courageous actions. Loren Eiseley sets an example of this in The Running Man- a chapter from his autobiography, All the Strange Hours. In this essay he reveals memories that show his lonely childhood which gives him the courage to overcome his problems.

Survival stories have many people facing lots of challenges. Today I will be looking at Brian from Brian’s winter by Gary Paulsen and Buck from Call of the Wild by Jack London. We are going to be look at how they develop the personal traits we all know as a characters traits. I will be discussing the way they act towards nature. Also how they act towards the cold. Finally I will be talking about how they are acting in their situations.
In the book, A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park, Salva shows perseverance is key when facing life’s challenges.
“Resolve must be the firmer, spirit the bolder, courage the greater, as our strength grows less.” (Anonymous). The stories of The Revenant and The Open Boat use the idea of persevering as a main staple to design their stories around. The authors of these stories, Michael Punke and Stephen Crane, respectively, use characterization to emphasize and convey the theme of “Humans posses a spirit which must persevere”. This theme can be seen in the characters through their; physical challenges, mental challenges, and the loss of hope.
We are all tested everyday to overcome unique challenges and obstacles that are presented in our lives. By realizing what we are grateful for we can enjoy great blessings, successes, and experience great wonders and happiness in our lives. However, none of us are immune to the difficulties and challenges that will occasionally come our way, to make the journey difficult at times, and to test ourselves. The three runners depended on a camaraderie to help them through difficult times, just as we depend on one another, our families, our leaders, and our friends to help us through challenging
Bethany Hamilton laid on her board eyes glassing over, her breathing steady as she murmured to her best friends dad “Get me to the truck please,” as she fought against the drowsiness threatening to overtake her consciousness determined to stay awake. It took all of Bethanies will, determination, and calmness to stay awake after that shark had taken her arm and part of her surf board. Bethanies story illustrates all the traits needed for survival a strong will, determination, and calmness combine to keep a person alive with their will, stay true to their set goal, and have peace in their time of survival.
This is what the young adult feels when they are coerced to leave their family or the place where they grew up enduring a magnificent kind of suffering, which these authors aim to convey in their books. Due to the dictatorial decisions that Lakshmi’s stepfather greedily makes and the bitter reality of her family’s poverty, Lakshmi was forced to leave her mother, Ama, and her village in the mountain where her childhood was spent, in order to work and earn money. Her departure coupled with what she confronted in the Happiness House, sexual slavery, are persuasive reasons that lead Lakshmi to complete her narration of the story with some meaningful expressions about the sense of suffering. On the other hand, Karana has something that is common but more sad, because all of her people abandoned her. While all the people on the island have decided to depart and the ship was about to sail, Kanara jumped from the ship to pick her brother up. Unfortunately, the ship did not return for the two stranded children, so they start a painful story of struggle on an isolated island that is full of wild and hungry dogs. That action indicates a tragic situation in which a girl suffered from loneliness for almost 18 years. A Long Walk to Water portrays how the fighting of an authoritarian regime against rebels vandalized the country of Sudan causing an essential reason for citizens to leave.
I dragged my feet through the parking lot, kicking up dust as I go. I dreaded going to practice everyday, but here I am. I sigh as I start the long walk across the empty fields to get to our practice spot. Everyday, I struggled to make it through the long practices, not because I was out of shape, but because I was so unhappy with what I was doing. Every weekend, I tried anything I could to get out of the games, but nonetheless I always showed up, ready to sit the bench for the entirety of our ninety minute game.
