Devastation In Our Generation One generation can learn many things from another. For instance, they can learn to persevere, have faith. And be generous. Each generation goes through a struggle. However, we must learn how to persevere. Luckily we have higher generations to teach us how. In the poem, “Mother to Son” it states “And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor…” The older generation (or mother) is saying that life is like a staircase, but the staircase will have problems that throw you off. However, later on in the poem, it says to keep persevering, keep walking through the stairs, or keep going through life even if you’re at the lowest point of your life. In the memoir “An Invisible Thread” a boy is losing faith, though a kind woman teaches him he’s worth this world and he should remain to have faith. I believe “An Invisible Thread” has a great way to describe faith in generations, due to the reason the older generation takes care of the younger one and teaches him great life lessons. Not only does the story have a great way to describe faith, later on, the same boy continues to have faith and now has a great job, and family. One day, I had to sing for this show thing, but I lost confidence and completely embarrassed myself so much I didn’t even perform that night. I lost the faith I had in me, but my parents brought me up. This describes faith because if I had just been confident and had faith in myself, I would have had bragging rights to my friends. This is connected to faith because I was losing faith when I was thinking about all the harsh things people would maybe say to me if I did what I was supposed to. I was contemplating about the show so much that I just didn’t do it, I just sat in the crowd and everyone noticed me there. “A Simple Act” is about lady who is being generous to a kid who grows up in poverty. I really enjoy this example because it shows that the older generation (lady) who makes meals and teaches the younger generation how to do things. Also, the boy ends up being quite generous to others all due to the fact that the lady was a role model to him. Whenever I am driving and see a homeless man, I feel quite bad. I want to be generous, though I really can’t cause I’m just a kid. I don’t have money! A lot of my friends also feel like this, and honestly, the feeling is the worst. This shows some of this generation does care about generosity. Maybe the wanting to help others was manipulated by older generations doings. A current example includes the 10 year old boy released by his kidnapper after singing a gospel song for hours. In Mark Twain’s The Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, Joan Arc, a teenage French military commander shows faith whenever she goes to battle or is about to face death. Eventually she gets captured and even though she will die she continues to keep her faith in God. By showing the effects of faith on Joan of Arc and her comrades, Mark Twain illustrates his belief that the value of an intense personal faith is important in everyone’s life.

Form and meaning are what readers need to analyze to understand the poem that they are evaluating. In “Mother to Son”, his form of writing that is used frequently, is free verse. There is no set “form”, but he gets his point across in a very dramatic way. The poem is told by a mother who is trying to let her son know that in her life, she too has gone through many frustrations just like what her son is going through. The tone of this poem is very dramatic and tense because she illustrates the hardships that she had to go through in order to get where she is today. She explains that the hardships that she has gone through in her life have helped her become the person that she has come to be. Instead of Hughes being ironic, like he does in some of his poems, he is giving the reader true background on the mother’s life. By introducing the background, this helps get his point across to the reader in a very effective way. At the moment the children are on their way to school, but as they progress, they will begin to move past the achievements of their parents. They exert themselves strenuously for the benefit of their children. They put forth much time and energy at manual labor. The mothers labored in giving birth to their children, and are laboring to raise them to adulthood. They sacrifice themselves so that their children may have a future better than their own.
The generation that I was born into can sometimes be easily misunderstood by those in earlier generations. The individuals in my generation get thrown many different labels such as those that Rosie Evans (n.d.) listed in her article, “Millennials, Generation Y, the Lost Generation, boomerang kids, the Peter Pan generation…” and more. This can impact us as a whole because some will begin to live by the labels, in some cases that can be negative but in others it may be beneficial. Many people in this generation believe that they can’t reach their full potential due to labels and prejudgment, while there are others believe nothing can hold them back.
