Perseverance is a tremendous part of my character; As a result, it motivates me to try and reach my goals. Every time I have a new goal, I aim high and work towards achieving it. This trait of my character identifies my personality, and I’m convinced that I would not have accomplished everything I have without it.
Moreover, I have three short-term goals that I plan on accomplishing within the next several years. The first goal is to complete my last year in high school. I want to be among the people in my class that will walk in Constitution Hall in June 2016. Secondly, my goal is to attend Howard University. Ever since I visited the campus during my freshman year, I fell in love with the atmosphere. I felt as though I belonged in the

campus and I knew that’s where I wanted to go. Additionally, what attracted me even more was the fact that numerous successful African Americans have attended this university and the students there want to strive and finesse as much as possible. I also want to learn more about the African American culture and I believe attending a prestigious institution like Howard would accomplish that. In order to achieve this goal, I plan on getting outstanding grades in all of my classes so that I can exceed the requirements needed to attend the university. Lastly, I want to be successful in college. Although this may seem like a broad goal, I believe it is essential to strive in college in order to gain more opportunities in life. How I plan on reaching this goal is to expand my time management habits, be attentive in class, foster relationships with professors, and to build my portfolio. My long term goals are more detailed.
In general, I do want to live a long and prosperous life. I also want to have a pleasing and a stable job, find love and eventually have a family of my own. However, there are two long-term goals that I have that can’t be accomplished unless I accomplish my short-term goals. One of those goals is to have a positive impact on others. I realized that one of the essential things about this goal is to better yourself. It is also essential to accept the fact that no one is flawless. Yes, there are narcissists that fail to admit that they are not flawless, however, their influence isn’t positive or helpful in the long run but rather damaging and cynical. By willing to be open-minded and experience new opportunities, I’ll have the tools I need to successfully have an impact on others. Finally, my last long-term goal is to go to law school and become a lawyer. It has been a dream of mine to be a lawyer due to the fact that I’ve always been passionate about issues and morals today. Not only do I want to express myself by doing what I love (public speaking), I also want to help people with whatever problems they face with the law. In order to complete this goal, I will be majoring in Communications. This major will help strengthen my writing skills and public speaking skills. This is crucial for someone who wants to attend law school. In addition, it will also broaden my knowledge by exposing me to potential career paths such as journalism or public relations. If I could reach these goals, I would feel ecstatic and
accomplished. All in all, the only way that I can prioritize these goals is by having the short-term goals accomplished by 2020 and have the long-term goals accomplished shortly after. I want to remain to have a positive impact on others for the rest of my life. As for law school, I do plan on attending it after college and hopefully by 2024, I can live my dream as a lawyer. Even if I don’t complete all these goals, they are guiding my life and letting me hope for the future. That’s what goals are for; they’re there to help people aim high and achieve their dreams.
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all. Dale Carnegie believed that perseverance could overcome even the harshest obstacles. Perseverance is inspired by a purpose, an unsatisfied drive to achieve a goal. During a cataclysmic event, only people with a purpose endure.
“ I am a slow walker but I never walk back.” Sometimes it takes time but you always want to get to the end. Even if things get in your way or something is hard, you never give up and you keep pushing forward. In my opinion, perseverance is an excessively essential trait to have in the case of survival. Shackleton needed to get out of the Ice to survive, he canoed for a severely long amount of time. It was very tiring and even so Shackleton didn’t give up. In the book Hatchet Brian needed a fire to survive. He kept trying but nothing seemed to be working, he never gave up and he just kept going.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines perseverance as the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. In today’s society, there are so many walls and barriers that prevent humans from achieving their dreams and goals and people begin giving up. However, great poets such as Homer and famous music groups such as Mumford and Sons have used the strife of humanity to compose works that can be used to inspire and institute hope for humanity. With perseverance, there are three key aspects, struggle, loyalty, and strength. The struggle is what allows humans to learn, grow, and better themselves, the loyalty demonstrated provides motivation for success, and the personal strength allows the person to build
“I will work harder” (Sinclair 22), a quote spoken by Lithuanian Immigrant Jurgis Rudkus. Jurgis is a fictional character in the book “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair. Whenever things get hard, he says these words and gives himself and his family hope. James Braddock is an American boxer who was most definitely making enough money to live, however with the great depression his life soon got turned upside down. James is a nonfiction character who was portrayed by Russel Crowe in the movie “Cinderella Man” which was directed by Ron Howard. A quote from James is “I have to believe that when things are bad I can change them.” When his family were threatened with starvation and losing their home, he did anything he could to lead them to a better life.
Many people show perseverance, including me. I showed perseverance when I failed a quiz and I knew to get my grade up I had to work harder and study more. I knew if my parents found out that I failed a quiz they would yell at me and would be disappointed on me for getting a bad grade on a quiz because I didn’t study. This factor contributes me to work harder, I learned that I need to work harder to succeed, like Salva, how he showed perseverance by looking for his family.
Perseverance is very important to succeed and accomplish something in the world. Many people struggle to have this characteristic, but there are few groups of people out there who have this unique attribute. There was a time in history that African Americans worked together and persevered to achieve a common goal. This goal was to achieve freedom and desegregation; they believed if they worked together as a community they could attain this goal.
“Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance”-Samuel Johnson. Perseverance is a trait in which must be earned through experience and trials. Dictionary.com states that “steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc.especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement” (Perseverance). This definition is somewhat unclear to the average person. To me, perseverance is the drive and or willpower to do something or to get a goal done, no matter the obstacle.
Perseverance: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. There are two sides to such a way of work, the positive, and the negative. Some people tend to become obsessed with accomplishing a goal, bringing out the negative side of perseverance. “Contents of a Dead Man’s Pocket” and “The Monkey’s Paw” show the negative side of perseverance, causing obsession and disaster.
One may ask, what is this concept and drive called perseverance? Perseverance is to continue steadfastly or determined. This concept encourages one to push through barriers, which could be physical or imaginary, push until you succeed. An individual’s form of success can differ depending on each circumstance, but the success can only be achieved if one is persistent. Perseverance is folded into many literature and experience to enable the concept to be received by the audience, for example in To Kill A Mockingbird.
The quality of unimaginable success is determined by grit. Despite confronting difficult life circumstances that delay the process individuals who are passionate, intelligent, and dedicated to one’s own success will continue maintaining consistency throughout their journey. Success is measured by an individuals’ commitment to effectively work hard towards life-changing goals. In the journal article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-term Goals,” Angela L. Duckworth conducts several studies in order to convey human’s capacity for higher achievements while still enduring challenges and failure. Although Duckworth’s research has proven that individuals who are less gritty tend to shift trajectory, I believe working hard and keeping “stamina” is essentially the key to achieving your goals (1088).
There are too many words to count that describe ¨America.¨ America is the home of brave men and women who will go through the worst and most unbearable things just to keep this country and its people safe. These men and women don't just fight for the people they fight for freedom for the people and for the citizens of foreign countries. The leaders and people of America need perseverance to keep on fighting and leading this country for the greater of mankind. One of my favorite quotes/ mottos of all time is Semper Fidelis which means always faithful. America isn't just some land that a bunch of dead people settled. It is the home and safe haven for millions of people and that is why we are so protective and strong.
Success is something everyone wants, but the route to success isn’t always accessible. I want to make over hundred grand a year if not more, own the house of my dreams, having all the cars I always wanted and travel to unusual places every chance I get. Living such lifestyles requires a successful career, behind that successfully career requires a higher level of education. So here I am, in college starting to climb that ladder directed to success. But before I take that initial climb, I consider the enduring road ahead of me, the road that still behind me and everything in between. Feeling the pressure to excel in my academics in order to achieve the success I desire and not willingly exhaust my time and money being invested in my college
I believe in perseverance and achievement, especially when it’s something you’ve worked so hard for. And, I’m not talking about a small achievement like finishing your homework right before it’s due. I am talking about a bigger achievement than that, massive even. An achievement that makes you jump for joy and, grin from ear to ear. Sometimes I don’t always believe in myself, that I might not work hard enough to meet my goal. There came a time where I wanted to give up. When I thought I wouldn’t have enough perseverance and will power to get something done.
It was just for a second that we exchanged eyes. He stared at me and I stared at him. Then suddenly a chill went into our spines; we both put our eyes down acting like we had seen each other for the very first time, while we were roommates, well at least for ten days. I couldn’t blame him for that and neither could he blame me. Situations were same for all of us-more than fifty people-living together there and sharing the same schedule.
