Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. In today’s educational system, physical activity is becoming less and less prevalent. Schools are cutting down on times spent in physical education classes as well as times at recess. However, this is a huge mistake. Many educators are unaware of the many benefits physical activity brings to students academically. Luckily teachers are able to incorporate physical activity in their classrooms by doing activities such as GoNoodle, classroom warm-ups and fitness breaks, SMART Board fitness games, and taking content and making movement in the classroom. According to Edward R. Laskowski (2016), children older than the age of 6 need at least an hour a day of physical activity. Most of the hour should be either moderate or vigorous aerobic activity. In addition, children should participate in muscle-strengthening and bone strengthening activities at least three days a week. However, most school districts are not helping to aid this need. In fact, with budget cuts, students are being given less opportunities to engage in physical activity. Integrating physical activity into classrooms has the ability to teach students different ways to exercise and become physically fit. Teachers can incorporate movement into academic lessons or add short bursts of activity (5-20 minutes) to regularly planned breaks. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2017), regularly planned physical activity of any kind can help children improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. In cooperating physical activity can also reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and obesity. Movement is one of the most highly debated topics among teachers today, as every individual has his/her own opinions in their teaching philosophy. Teachers must get around barriers caused by the high priorities of standardized testing and low effort to include movement in their classroom; therefore, it puts too much stress on the general education teachers. There are insufficient amounts of space to complete activities requiring movement when in a classroom; therefore, the teachers are incapable of safely navigating students around the room. Some students will refuse to participate in different physical activities, causing frustration when teachers are trying to plan full class activities, and this takes away from academic instruction. It is often that educators exclude these physical activities from the classroom due to stress that is put on the schools to perform higher academically; however, studies show exercise may be a large factor in the student’s performance. There are so many ways to incorporate movement into the lessons that increase the students’ academic achievements while motivating them. As space is limited in the classroom, during the warmer months, teachers can use the outdoors as an engaging experience to refresh the students’ minds and prepare them for new lessons. These activities provide students with adequate physical fitness especially during the season of their activity. Therefore, adding forty-five minutes to an hour and a half of extra physical exercise is not necessary because those students are already physically fit. Active students usually have hours of practices and rehearsals everyday, taking away time they could use to work on homework, or use as relax time. If students are forced to do even more physical exercise during the school day, it tires them further and simply exhausts them. According to Arthur Allen of Webmd, thirty minutes of exercise a day is enough to prevent diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
Gym class has the obvious benefits of helping kids become healthier and to become in good physical condition. This success may show up on the weight scale, in different clothing sizes, or less visits to the doctor. Not only is there success physically, but gym classes are beneficial to the mind as well. Children who are physically fit absorb and retain new information more effectively than children who are out of shape. This raises the questions about if cutting physical education programs is a wise decision for schools to make. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Opponents of physical education in schools state that gym is not the best way to utilize students’ time. Students’ should be given the choice to participate in gym class or not because many students aren’t as athletic and don’t enjoy it enough to want to do it in school. Despite this downfall, PE is important in students’ life and even though some don’t enjoy it as much, they need it in order to be successful in life. If not, diseases and health risks could come up and it wouldn’t be robust. Ultimately, physical education provides superior benefits.

No matter how fit a person may be, there is always room for physical improvement. “Many parents/guardians all across the country are questioning their state's P.E. mandate and considering whether it is necessary for their student athlete to take a gym class,” says Gina Cairney. Every person has a different view on the issue. Certain people just refuse to change their perspective to see the other side of the story.
It is no secret that kids today are out of shape. Today all kids want to do is play video games or play on their phones because of phones and video games kids don’t want to do anything. It ends up leading to kids getting overweight, with that being said teachers can’t help if a kid goes outside or not when they are home but, what they can do is make sure they get some kind of physical activity by making gym class longer.
