Although, one can concede soda is in no way a nutritional substance, people have the right to choose to drink it whether in moderation or in excess. Therefore, no, cola should not be banned. The American beverage industry is a key role to the successes of our nation’s economy. It supports local communities, and creates numerous amounts of jobs. According to American Economics Group, Inc., “the beverage industry is responsible for creating 3.02 million jobs that generate $278 billion in economic activity” (The American Beverage Association). Without the 3 million plus jobs that these companies generate, our economy would be at an enormous fault. The Coca-Cola Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation have a long tradition of supporting educational programs. “In 2011, we invested more than $22 million in support of academic scholarships, first-generation college scholarships, mentoring, dropout prevention and literacy and reading programs” (Giving through the Coca-Cola foundation and through the Coca-Cola Company). This company is donating money for the greater good of the country in educating people. Without the soft drink industry they wouldn’t be able to provide others with funds to educate themselves and one day become somebody. Another great thing that beverage companies do is help and donate millions towards charities. “In 2003, beverage companies donated roughly $326 million to charities” (The American Beverage Association). These companies not only provide jobs and give to charities, they help promote the biggest events that are to come. The soft drink industry in the United States is a highly profitably, but competitive market. In 2000 alone, consumers on average drank 53 gallons of soft drinks per person a year. There are three major companies that hold the majority of sales in the carbonated soft drink industry in the United States. They are the Coca Cola Company with 44.1% market share, followed by The Pepsi-Cola Company with 31.4% market share, and Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. with 14.7% market share. Each company respectively has numerous brands that it sales. These top brands account for almost 73% of soft drink sales in the United States. Dr. Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. owns two of the top ten brands sold. Colas are the dominant flavor in the U.S carbonated soft drink industry; however, popularity for flavored soft drinks has grown in recent years. The changing demographics of the U.S population have been an important factor in the growing popularity of these flavored soft drinks. The possible impact of this factor will be addressed later in the case.

Considered an innovative tactic back in 1887, it was followed by newspaper publicity and the distribution of promotional items bearing the Coca Cola script to participating pharmacies. One of the most famous advertising slogans in Coca Cola history “The Pause That Refreshes” first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1929. In 2009, the “Open Happiness” campaign was unveiled globally. The central message of “Open Happiness” is an invitation to billions around the world to recess, revive with a Coca Cola, and continue to enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures.

Producing healthier drinks could potentially get their products back in schools. Researching into cheaper materials as well as environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic would be another recommendation. The main concern for Coca Cola is water supply. Without water Coca Cola would not be able to stay in business. It is recommended for Coca Cola to reduce the amount of water it uses. Citizens have rights to drink whatever they want, and they aren’t going to be willing to give up those rights because someone told them to. Senators and congressman everywhere have made it known that they do not approve of these types of bans. There are many people in this world that are less willing to change their minds when they are told to. This ban is asking for too much control over citizens and does not include all unhealthy obesity causing drinks.

Banning this will influence the economy in a bad way and the economy is already in bad spot.
