In modules 4 and 5 I learned a lot about the differences between groups and teams, how teams work, and how to manage a team. I also learned about negotiations and conflict. Over the last two weeks I completed five different assessments which were:
1. Team effectiveness
2. How good are your leadership skills?
3. How good are your management skills?
4. How good are your people skills?
5. How good is your anger management?
The first assessment I did was the team effectiveness assessment. I scored a 67 on this assessment. From doing this assessment I learned that I am good at worrking on a team but I need to work on better conflict management. Along with many of the other assesments I 've taken it recommended I work on dealing with conflict. This assesment taught me that even though choosing similar people for a team may be easier, having some diversity on your team is more effective. Forming a diverse team may create some conflict but it will help the team bcome more creative and able to come up with new ideas. This assessment suggested that I work on delegating tasks better. The results for this assessment did not surprise me. I feel I handle my anger very well. By doing this assessment I learned that it is important to have an understanding of what triggers my anger. If I started a dairy and recorded the situations that made me angry I may see a trend. If I find a trend, I could come up with a better solution on how to handle a similar situation and be prepared for it. I also learned how important it is to regularly releive stress by deep breathing or doing something like exercising so my anger doesn 't build up and make things worse. Another important thing I learned is good communication skills help when your comfortable talking about different issues that bother me. One sentance that really stood out to me in my results was "Accept that things don 't always work out." That is a huge struggle for me bacuse I 'm always looking for that happy ending which doesn 't always
Prompt #4 Response: Successful team performance first includes a clear sense of self. It is easier to work with a team when you know yourself first and then get to know the others on the team. I personally liked the Character Traits/Feedback assessment because I was able to determine my results without being told my character traits. I scored a 0 on the realistic scale. I scored a 0 for the fact I am not a hands on and practical individual. I do not like working with materials, tools, and machinery. I would rather work with other in close proximity and build relationships. My realistic score of 0 was not surprising, since it doesn’t correlate with my personality traits. On the investigative scale, I scored a 9. Thinking is a critical part in counseling. I desire to work with others to find solutions to their problems. My artistic score was a 4, which reflects my love for the arts and music. I would love to incorporate art and music into the counseling process with my future clients. The self-awareness assessment was probably the most useful for me out of them all. One of the questions asked was “I feel in charge of what happens to me, good and bad”. When I first answered the question I gave myself a 6 because I completely felt in the beginning that everything that happens in like to me is completely up to me, I determine if I do well in school, work or in relationships and the route that I personally take in these positions in life are going to determine my success. One of the key assignments that I think has allowed me to develop the most during this module is the assessment centre. During this task for Enterprise Rent-A-Car, we were put into groups and given a specific budget of money that we could donate to a panel of charities, based on the company 's values. What I wanted to achieve was to get an insight into what the environment is like and the sort of exercises that take place so that I can become familiar with the process, and I can use it to my advantage. Going to the assessment centre, I was slightly nervous as I had never taken part in one before and for the fact that I was being marked on my performance, so I was unsure of what to expect, which made me feel uncomfortable. These goals are usually the drivers of an effective team when all of the participants are communicating to develop the goals they would all like to achieve. In business, this can be seen when groups set a sales goal and develop a plan of action to achieve this goal. Skills and knowledge possessed by every member is also important for a team to become high performance. Although it is among the most important factors, however, it must be coupled with a good working relationship with every team member and good collaboration with every team member. The members who possess the good skills and wide knowledge will be a useful resource to the team if that team member can share their strengths with the other team members and vice versa. It is usually misconstrued that having skillful and intelligent team members is already enough to make a team work right. All the team members were well aware of their individual roles and their team’s role. As our team was multi-cultural, some arguments were already expected. GROUP STAGES Our group is composed of six students which were made in the first week itself, with a few additions and subtractions in the next week. By the second week our group was formed and proceeded to a second stage known as Storming (Tuckman, 1965).
Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class.
