Tattoos in the workplace are a very controversial subject in today’s society. Tattoos have been around thousands of years and there is much history on tattoos. Not only do they express one’s self, it displays the art of the person. Most every tattoo on someone’s body means something personal to them. Times are changing where most careers are accepting tattoos. Times are changing and people with tattoos work in a diversity of careers. Tattooed people hold entry-level jobs as well as top executive positions. So what’s an employer supposed to do when it comes to hiring tattooed people? Is body art a workplace issue? Does having a visible tattoo say anything about an individual that is relevant to his or her job?

(Faw, 2011) Not all people with tattoos are delinquents, you probably won’t even know someone has tattoos unless you ask them. There are many professions that will never be able to have visible tattoos because it affects their line of work. The healthcare field is a many field. People are not impressed with doctors or nurses and sometimes will refuse to use them if they have visible tattoos. According to www.aimseducation.edu , the percentage of tattooed adults in the United States is 42% and rising. Also they took surveys to determine these stats about tattoos in the workplace. 76% of employees feel tattoos hurt job interviews chances, 73% of Human Resources says they would hire people with tattoos, 6% said they wouldn’t hire if they had visible tattoos, and 4% of the people with tattoos feel they have been discriminated sometime in their work

Tattoos as a social norm, proves that in some cases they are acceptable and in other cases, they still cause problems like stereotyping.
Seeing how not accepting tattoos and piercings in the workplace can cause greater problems, employers need to start accommodating for individuals of all different backgrounds. Tattoos have become very popular in many parts of the world, particularly in Europe, Japan, and North and South America. The growth in tattoo culture has seen an increase of new artists into the industry, many of whom have excellent arts training. With advancements in tattoos and the ongoing upgrade of the equipment used for tattooing, this has led to an improvement in the quality and distinct look of tattoos. In today’s world there are several occupations one may choose from once receiving an education. Whether a person wants to be a doctor, a teacher, or a business person, one should be able to use their education to gain access to that job. Getting a job is no easy task, for there are many people who are also searching for that same job. Employers will interview many people just to find the right one and often times will have many stand-out applications to evaluate. When it comes down to making a decision, something as simple as having a tattoo could ruin every hope one has of getting the job. In the twenty-first century, where people want to express themselves and their art, getting a tattoo isn’t all about representing gangs or committing crimes anymore. Times have changed and what people might consider normal nowadays wouldn’t be considered normal in the past. In the article, Secret Ink: Tattoo’s Place in Contemporary American Culture, states that, “The expanding popularity of tattoos seems to be based on the fact that these can serve various purposes for different individuals.
