The twenty-second chapter of A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking is all about informative speaking. The authors break down informative speaking into five categories; those being, gaining and sustaining audience involvement, finding ways to increase understanding, what informative speeches are about, deciding how to communicate the information, and reducing the confusion.
In order to gain and sustain audience involvement the speaker must adapt their speech accordingly based upon the audience analysis. In addition, they (speaker) must provide the audience with new information on the topic they were not aware of. Nobody wants to listen to information they already knew.

(p. 157) Speakers should prepare a well-organized introduction that clearly discusses what will talked about and the main points. The use of transitions, repetition, organizational pattern, and presentation aids are ways to increase the audiences understanding of a particular topic. Informative speeches cover a wide range of subjects and include, people, events, objects, etc. While there are a wide range of subject matters, the topics covered under those subjects are narrower. “Typically, we communicate information by defining, describing, demonstrating, and/or explaining it.” (p. 159) Defining is used when the information being discussed is new to the audience. Sometimes speeches need demonstrations or “how to” type speeches. Explanation speeches are for topics that require something needing to be explained, i.e., what makes it rain? Finally, speakers must reduce chances of confusion through the use of analogies to build on any knowledge the audience already has. In addition, speakers have to counter any wrong assumptions and take into account the different learning styles of the audience. When it comes to informative speaking, the goal is to provide the audience with knowledge on a specific topic. This is accomplished through gaining audience involvement, increasing understanding, communicating information correctly, and reducing confusion.

Psychographics: All members of the audience will have some college education and will be in an attentive mood because of my topic. Music is something that everyone can relate to. These factors will affect my speech by allowing me to grab the audience’s attention and allow the audience to focus on my topic.
When a speaker explains information to an audience, helping them understand it, then the speaker is practicing informational speaking. This rhetorical function is used to teach and inform. It is the speaker’s duty to be clear about what they are saying and on target. To not bore the audience, the speaker should make connections between the topic and the audience and discuss how it can be useful to them.
Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.

I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
First, I have to the best of my ability, attempted to overcome my fear of public speaking in the classroom. Secondly, I have learned about the ways to express myself through the use of verbal and nonverbal skills in creating and delivering a speech. I am now familiar with the three types of categories of public speaking; the commemorative speech, the informative, and the persuasive. With each speech, I learned there were new elements to each. The commemorative speech pays tribute to a person, a group of people, an institution, or an idea. The informative speech uses descriptions, vivid details, and demonstrations to explain a subject, a person, or place to inform the audience on a chosen topic. The persuasive speech uses words in an artistic manner for directing and appealing to the audience's emotions by presenting supportive information, argumentation, or symbolism. With all three speeches, the goal of the speaker is to reach the audience and in return, they will give you feedback. Through this process, I have learned to become a better thinker, organizer, and raised my self-esteem about myself and my disability, and I have increased my knowledge and built confidence in myself as a speaker in

I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. When it comes to public speaking, there are varieties of models that can be applied. One of these models is the transaction model. This model improves on the deficiencies of the interactional model. The basic premise of the interaction model is that individuals can be able to send and receive messages at the same time (Velentzas and Broni, 2014). As opposed to the interaction model where individuals alternate roles of either being the sender or the receiver of the message and the meaning of the message, being sent from sender to receiver in the transactional model the meaning is co-created by both people taking part in the interaction. In the transaction model individuals are simultaneously engaging in the process of exchange if information.
For verbal communication to be effective, the sender must consider four strategies that will give emphasis to their message. Below I will describe each of these strategies, indicate which strategy I believe to be most effective, and although I have not delivered a speech before a group, public setting or mass media using one of these strategies, I will share a group presentation I witnessed and the strategies used.
Communication provides people with the crucial opportunity to interact with each other socially, solve problems, and inform each other. Mastering the skills involved in four major areas of communication, public speaking, group communication, interpersonal communication, and computer mediated communication, gives people the chance to share their ideas to a captive audience.
