Communicating properly through public speaking is an essential part of working as a Regional and Urban Town Planner. Throughout Town Planning, public speaking plays an important role in communicating with not only clientele and fellow planners but also the wider community in various congregations. However, there are various tactics that need to be implemented to be able to not only successfully convey the correct information, but to deliver it in a clear and concise manner that people at all education levels can understand. Aspects of speaking that need to be analysed and better implemented into presentations are; proper preparation, having a clear goal or objective, all of these aspects contribute to a successful and fully rounded presentation. This report will explain, as well as positively and critically analyse, three aspects of presenting that are directly related to problems currently being faced by Regional and Urban Town Planners. The report will analyse how the aspects can be better improved upon as well as implemented into current methods of delivering information.

Renowned and engaging speakers have the ability to connect their values and ideas to greater causes and principles, leaving an enduring impact on the audience. You may be questioning what makes a great speaker? And what qualities and features contribute to the formation of a powerful speech? It is understood that a great speaker has the ability to communicate to larger truths and carve those truths on the audience’s hearts and minds as they surpass the context, place and time of the deliverance of the speech, and focus on conveying their ideas and values.

TED talks are great examples of well executed speeches with important messages. In 2006, Ken Robinson gave a speech titled 'Do schools kill creativity?' in which he talks about how the education system is geared towards maximizing the industrial needs and essentially punishes the creativity in students. In 2015, Celeste Headlee revealed the '10 ways to have a better conversation' in her speech. Essentially, the main message of her speech is that most are more interested in themselves than others when they are having a conversation, which can be resolved mostly by listening and paying attention. These two TED talks exhibit great examples of the skills needed for public speaking and showed great organization in their speeches.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy. Lastly, the speaker must be fluid and eloquent with his words, the speaker must be able to sound clear and crisp while delivering their
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
It was made clear in our first seminar that there would be group presentations in the subsequent seminars and everybody would be given the chance to speak. This was to ensure that at the end of year, we would not be having any stuttering problems or major tension in facing the class during our presentation week. I realized along the way, that this not only helped me improve my presentation skills but it helped me get closer to the subject marketing. What I feared was so temporary; before long I enjoyed my marketing class more. I looked forward to those group activities, in which we were given time to converse, to find out about each other and also to know what exactly we were learning. It was through these activities I understood the subject more intensely.
A lot of people do not understand that regional planning is important for land development but most of them don’t care. Land development is very important to a community because without it,it would not be anything there or just a useless spot with nothing there.(According to Dr. David Prytherch on November 13,2013).In Miami University they teach planners techniques about being a regional planner. When individuals are at the University everyone has to be dedicated to the program. Plus individuals have to be willing to want to learn about the job and take it seriously. Another thing is when being a regional planner a lot of the planners believe in commitment to their skilled professionals. With that commitment they could end up being a superior themselves one day.
Preparation is the key word. Properly preparing for your presentation will alleviate most of the stress that you carry on your shoulders when walking into that stuffy room. At this point you’ve done your homework. You understand your material, you understand your audience, you understand your process, and you inherently understand your mission. Now it’s time for the concrete work.
