Stress and Coping

There is something that everyone in this world tends to encounter; stress is that thing. For most people stress is an everyday thing. For others it can be just an occurrence from time to time. It can also affect our personal relationships without even us realizing that it was the main issue. Stress is “a person’s response to events that are threatening or challenging” (Feldman, 2010). Since there are many different type of stressors, they can be places in different categories. Stressors can be categorized as cataclysmic events, personal stressors, or even as background stressors (“daily hassles”). Though no matter what type of stress one has, there is always a way to cope to get through it and keep it from harming our relationships. Even if it is an everyday occurrence or a once in a while occurrence.
Thousands of people have experienced an earthquake at one point in their life. An earthquake can be a type of stressor. This type of stressor is called a cataclysmic event. These events are “strong stressors that occur suddenly and typically affect many people simultaneously” (Feldman, 2010). Though some might think all kinds of stress lingers, but in these cases they usually don’t. In most cases it causes relief because people would believe that the worst has already happened and so they go on with their day with possibly even less stress. For example if I so happened to be shopping at the mall while my mom was at work and suddenly I felt a strong earthquake, I would begin to stress about the fact that my mom works in a large building nearby. Then I would do anything I can to get in contact with her to find out if she is well and unharmed. Then I would feel relieved to know that she is fine.

Overall, no matter what category we put stress in, it is always going to be a part of our lives. Either as a motivator or as problem that gets in the way. Cataclysmic events, personal stressors, background stressors, they are happening all around us and the only thing we can do is cope with it all. Once we know how stress affects us in our relationships and everyday lives the easier it is for us to cope with it all.
