Volleyball is one of the biggest team sports there are. It is big in the summer olympics and all around the world men and women play it every day. The game of volleyball was originally called “mintonette”, it was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895 at Springfield College in Massachusetts, they made it along with basketball. In 1957 volleyball was officially an Olympic sport, the first games were held in Tokyo 1964 and the first beach volleyball games were in 1996 Atlanta. In London 2012, USA got 12 silver medals. In the Olympics, the Soviet Union has won the most medals. The best country right now is Brazil, winning gold medals in London 2012. One of the best volleyball players from Minnesota right now is Tori Dixon who played for the Gophers …show more content…
2010 to 2013. She is currently a middle blocker, is 6’4 and went to the University of Minnesota for communications. Another Olympic player from Minnesota is Lindsey Berg, she is a setter and was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and played for the Minnesota Gophers. She won 2 silver medals when she played for the USA team in 2003. The rules of volleyball are, there are 6 people on each side of the net.
There are the positions of libero, which is someone who only plays the back row passing the whole time and wears a different color jersey than everyone else on the team. There is a middle blocker and hitter, outside blocker and hitter, right side hitter and blocker, setter, and DS, which is a person who can sub in for whoever. The game goes to 25 and there can be a minimum of 2, 25 point games. First, the person serves the ball and the team can only have 3 contacts with the ball and it is usually a pass, set, then kill. If the ball touches the ground inside the lines on the other team, i is you point and you get to serve again. If it is out of the lines, it is the other teams point and ball. You can not touch the net during anything or it is called a net foul then it would be the other team's ball. If the ball is touched more than 3 times it is the other team's ball.
School Volleyball teams start in about 8th grade, it starts in the fall when school starts, then ends when winter starts. Club teams start when you are about at age 11, club teams are usually almost all year round and they travel around the US for tournaments. When you play club volleyball, more scouts from colleges come to the tournaments and watch you play, you will most likely get a scholarship for college volleyball if you play club. Club volleyball is a big commitment and also is very expensive.
Volleyball is an overall great sport for
men, women and kids to play, it is all about teamwork and competing with others. My advice is that you play it because it is a really fun sport!
I have played volleyball for 5 years. I have played school volleyball for five years, and club volleyball for four. Throughout my years of playing, I have recognized a significant difference between club volleyball and school volleyball. I have played for two clubs in my four years of playing club. The first two years, I played for a club named Platform Elite. The last two years, I have played for Iowa Select, and this year I am playing my club season with Infinity X. Personally, I prefer club volleyball over school volleyball. Club volleyball and school volleyball can be compared in three different categories: price, competition, and “politics” within the sport and its’ players.
Later, when they became a team, they look back on that and think what a coincidence. Kerri played not only volleyball, but basketball as well in high school, earning a state championship with both teams. Moving on to collegiate level, Walsh dominated the court at Stanford. Kerri was the second volleyball player ever to be a four-time first team All-American while at Stanford (1996-99). (Kerri Walsh Jennings). In 1999 Walsh joined the USA National Team for indoor volleyball. She graduated from Stanford in 2001 as the best all-around volleyball player in collegiate history. Kerri thought college level was the highlight of her volleyball career, little did she know, the Olympics were waiting for her. (Kerri Walsh Jennings
I looked in their faces and knew mine mirrored theirs. I didn’t want it to, but it did. Just ten minutes ago, we all were so jubilant. We were so sure we were going to win. We had all wanted it for so long, but we finally felt is as our destiny just a few moments ago. But as our opponent threw the ball in the air, I knew she was just about to serve another ace. However, when the ball landed three feet in front of our best passer, something snapped inside of me.
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. It was created because basketball was good for kids, but it was too tiring for the local businessmen. Volleyball contained less running and it needed less endurance for the men to play. It was less strenuous, but it has evolved from there. Morgan wanted a game with strong athletic impulse, but no physical contact. He combined a tennis net and a basketball, and took the idea of innings from baseball. He soon found out that a basketball was too heavy, so he designed a new ball that was softer and lighter, the Volleyball. The Volleyball was originated in the United States on July 7, 1896 at Springfield College where the first volleyball game was played. The game started out going to twenty one points, but
Volleyball is a fun game that was invented in 1895. Volleyball soon became popular and is now the second most popular sport. In 1964 the volleyball became a sport at the Olympics. There are two types of volleyball indoor and beach. Indoor volleyball there are teams of six and in beach volleyball there are pair, so teams are with two people.
Illustrating the arrangement of players mathematically requires that one understand the standard dimensions of a volleyball court. According to Lithio and Webb (2006), a standard volleyball court resembles a rectangle, which is 59 ft long by 29 ft, 6 in. wide. A net, centrally placed, separates the court into two squares. Stretching from the end of every side of the volleyball court is an area from which the ball is served, at least 6 ft wide. A player can stand in any region of this area to serve (consider figure 1) (Lithio & Webb, 2006).
Volleyball players tend to be long, lean athletes. Greater height allows players to play the ball above the net, executing spikes and performing blocks. Taller athletes also cover more court and have longer arms, allowing them to
Volleyball Changes and Rules throughout the Years While researching my topic about volleyball, I found lots of information on how rules have changed, how the sport was created along with information about how volleyball does in the Olympics. I would also like to grasp how, where, who, and when volleyball was invented. I am researching this topic because volleyball is my favorite sport and I would like to know more about its history and learn some more about the rules of the setter. I am a setter on my volleyball team. My goal in this paper is to connect the rule changes and absorb as much information about this amazing hobby or sport as much as I can and share what I have learned.
Volleyball, which was invented in 1895 by using different aspects of basketball and tennis, has grown to be the second most played sport in the world (Volleyball History 1). Volleyball started as a recreational game played in local YMCAs and today is now played at all school levels including college, in the Olympics, and professionally. Volleyball is a amusing sport that can be played by anyone, at any skill level, indoors or outdoors, and even on the beach.
Volleyball is a very popular sport around the world. It is especially popular in the U.S., which is where is originated (NCVA). It was created just two years after the game basketball was invented (Hartwell). To create this game, Morgan mixed different things from the sports Tennis, Handball, Baseball, and Basketball (NCVA). “Morgan used the bladder of a basketball to provide a lighter ball with a more lively bounce,” (Hartwell).
Both sports help you to grow tall, but basketball includes a lot of jumping so it makes you grow more than average. In volleyball, it makes you grow at a so-so average rate. At some point, you don’t want to grow in basketball. You want to be short, and be able to move faster on the court. Yes, in basketball you move a lot and you can get to the ball quicker, but being short helps if you need to get to the ball in a close area where tall people can.
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
The game of tennis is not very popular in Pakistan. Initially tennis was played by the British in Pakistan and today it is legacy of those days and so it is not a common game in Pakistan and the common man at the grass root level is hardly aware how tennis is played, the ground and the gadgetry required so.
At the beginning of the game, players would use a bat to hit the ball over the net. If the ball did not cross the net, the server was out. If the server was the third person out on his team, his whole side was out (“Volleyball History 1895-1900). Today, there are no bats involved in the game, or even “outs”. Net height has had the most changes from 1895 to 1976. It started at six feet, six inches tall. It was raised to seven feet, six inches in 1900. In 1916, the net was raised to eight feet tall. By 1976, the women’s net height was seven feet, four and one-eighths inches (“History of Volleyball Rules”). Now, a high school girls volleyball net is seven feet, four inches, which has barely been changed since 1976. The net height in 1895 seems so much shorter than the rest of the heights. Nets aren’t the only things that have had multiple changes, though. The ball for volleyball started as the bladder of a basketball. This ball was too light and slow for a fast paced game. A whole basketball was too heavy, so Morgan and Spalding worked together to design a ball for the games (“Volleyball History 1895-1900”). Playing with the bladder of a basketball would almost be like playing with a balloon. Playing with a basketball is extremely hard and painful, and the ball is too big and heavy. Since volleyball was getting its own ball, it needed its own net. The net used at the beginning was originally borrowed from tennis. It wasn’t very tall because the average American was shorter than they are now (“This was How Volleyball Was Introduced”). Since then, the net has been raised almost a whole foot. Along with a net, volleyball needed a court to go with it. The court started as 25 feet wide and 50 feet long. A tennis court is 27 feet wide. In 1912, the size was changed to 30 feet wide and 60 feet long (“History of Volleyball Rules”). Equipment isn’t the only thing that has been changing about the
This research task requires that, through participation in skill learning and game play during the volleyball unit we have been required to observe and analyse the characteristics of skilled performers; receive feedback on weaknesses in technique and develop and participate in training activities that could correct these weaknesses.
