From tetherball to air sports, there are about 8,000 sports in the word! More than you think. Two that people know are volleyball and basketball. Some people think that basketball is better than volleyball, but both have their pros and cons. Basketball was invented in 1891 by a man named James Naismith. Volleyball was invented in 1895 by a William G. Morgan. Since basketball was invented first, more people find basketball more fun than volleyball. Both sports have their reasons which are better, and I think we will see some in this essay. I think that volleyball helps you get in shape, but the downside is that you do a lot of conditioning, and your body becomes sore. Same with basketball, you get a healthy, fit, lean body, but your body aches from the workout you do. Volleyball conditioning includes cardio drills, …show more content…
Both sports help you to grow tall, but basketball includes a lot of jumping so it makes you grow more than average. In volleyball, it makes you grow at a so-so average rate. At some point, you don’t want to grow in basketball. You want to be short, and be able to move faster on the court. Yes, in basketball you move a lot and you can get to the ball quicker, but being short helps if you need to get to the ball in a close area where tall people can. In volleyball, having hops as a short player makes you a valuable player because you can block the ball, tip it even if you're the shortest player, you can jump as high as the tallest player on your team, but the downside, being short in volleyball is a little bad. You can't get to a fast tempo ball, if a ball is passed really fast you can't get to it quick enough, and you can’t block if the ball is moving really fast(unless you have hops). To conclude, height doesn’t matter in what you play. If you play volleyball or basketball and your so-so tall, it's good. It doesn’t matter about your height, it matters who you
Research suggests a person’s height does not affect their ability to make a successful jump shot. The ability to make a successful jump shot be determined by the arc in which enters the rim of the basket. When a basketball enters the rim on a 45° angle with a backspin it increases the percentage of a successful jump shot. The height of a basketball player is key when the player is taller, they are able to make more successful defensive blocks and able to get more rebounds of the basketball.
In 1891 James Naismith created the game of basketball, this game started off as a game only man played. James Naismith was a Canadian P. E teacher and invented the game for his students during the winter. The game of basketball started in Massachusetts where Naismith invented the game and has now spread throughout the world. Not only did the sport start to pave its way, but so did women’s basketball. As time went on women’s basketball took off and became more popular with changes along the way.
Playing a school sport enables you to bond with your teammates, making lifelong friends. Sports are fun and thrilling; they help kids get into shape. For years now there have been kids who play sports who also are very good in academics. Sports help kids get organized and teach them to balance their school work with sports. The article to start all the buzz about no sports in high school is written by
Like Gladwell points out about the advantage in youth hockey being born at the beginning of the calendar year, Leagues are split into ages and if you are one of the oldest 6 year olds you are months more physically developed than those kids born in the later half of the year. The more developed and talented kids are given more coaching and time to practice than the younger smaller kids. The gap in talent only grows as time goes on, the more skilled get more coaching than less skilled which only widens the gap. My uncles all started school later and were born early in the school year, most graduated when they were around 18.5 years old. The extra half year let them grow more than most kids which meant they all had an obvious advantage playing with kids a little younger and shorter. That advantage meant that they were better than average at a young age and just like Gladwell showed in hockey, advantages only grow from there. As freshmen in highschool they were much taller and more skilled than their younger classmates, which helped them make varsity teams and the more skilled competition made them even
I can watch volleyball all day because of how much precision, aggression, and mental toughness is needed. Spectators may not always see that side of the sport, but as a player, I know that it takes more than just a powerful hit or serve to be successful. Slamming the ball down other teams’ throats or hitting someone in the face so hard that they fall over (my personal favorite) are great, but, unfortunately, they’re not always the smartest choice. It’s the technique and the years of acquired intelligence of the game that keep me engaged and coming back for more.
Even though football and soccer often share a name, the two sports are vastly different: they both contain their own merits though; each has its own athletes, rules, and fan base. Athletes in both sports are incredibly fit and in control of their bodies although they can differ. In soccer, all positions require speed, agility, and leg dexterity in order to out run their opponent and maneuver the ball while in football the variety of positions require different attributes. Height is only beneficial in soccer for some defenders and mid-fielders in order to gain an advantage to jump for heading while it can act to slow attackers who need speed and quickness above jump height. Speed, in both running and ball control, is required above all else to chase or lose the other team. To wrestle control of the ball from opponents, defenders in soccer must simply be stronger than the lightweight sized attackers. Only goalies need hand-eye coordination while the rest of the team needs only foot finesse. In football the many positions require their own set of needs. Quarterbacks must be tall to see the field over the lineman and have a good arm to throw the ball. Lineman must be as large and strong as possible to block or move the opposing line man. Runningbacks need speed and quickness to out run and dodge while having enough strength to break tackles and hold on to the ball. Receivers are similar except that they also need hand-eye coordination to catch passes and height to outreach the defense. Linebackers must be the most versatile, with strength to take down ball carriers and a combination of speed and coordination to keep up with receivers. Defensive backs need to keep up with receivers to stop passes. Mentally, it is demanded that players...
Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. Basketball was a simple game that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith spread the rules freely, and there was a need for Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest "Phog" Allen (1885-1974), who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas and went on to win 771 games as a coa...

Taller athletes also have many advantages, such as longer legs and arms, and more strength. Tall athletes aren't as great in some aspects as compared to shorter ones. Short athletes have quicker reaction times.
The history of volleyball goes back to the year 1895. The game was invented by a man by the name of William G. Morgan, at a YMCA in Massachusetts (NCVA). Morgan was an instructor at the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) when he created the volleyball game (NCVA). Volleyball is a very popular sport around the world. It is especially popular in the U.S., which is where it originated (NCVA).
Many would disagree with me and say that high school sports actually have more benefits than negativities for a student. For example a student in sports would be more active which would make them fitter and healthier. A student that in a team sport would make more friends which would improve their social skills and increase their
Although many sports are not considered American-made, basketball is one of the few that began in America. In fact it is the only major sport that can be considered American-made (Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). The inventor of basketball was Dr. James Naismith, who created the sport in 1891(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). This was all the way back when there were only forty-four states(nbahoopsonline.com, NBA History). He made the sport in Springfield, Massachusetts(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). Naismith invented this sport because he was P.E. teacher seeking a sport with limited physical contact, but it contained running, jumping, shooting, and hand-eye coordination(Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). The game first used peach baskets and a soccer like ball(History.com Staff,
