She passes, she sets, she hits. Kill! Volleyball is a very interesting sport and is the second most popular sport in the whole world falling behind soccer. The way volleyball was created, how it has changed over time, and the rules of volleyball give it a really cool and interesting history.
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. It was created because basketball was good for kids, but it was too tiring for the local businessmen. Volleyball contained less running and it needed less endurance for the men to play. It was less strenuous, but it has evolved from there. Morgan wanted a game with strong athletic impulse, but no physical contact. He combined a tennis net and a basketball, and took the idea of innings from baseball. He soon found out that a basketball was too heavy, so he designed a new ball that was softer and lighter, the Volleyball. When volleyball was created, it was made for the local businessmen to play, but most people that play it now are from the ages of 12-17 years old. Volleyball is more popular among teens and young adults. In 1917, the winning point score was changed from 21 to 15 points. Also in 1895 a volleyball game consisted of nine innings, today the a game can be best out of 3 matches or best out of 5 matches. The winner of those matches ends up winning the whole game. In 1951 volleyball was played by over 50 million people worldwide. Now volleyball is played in over 130 countries, imagine how many people that is.
