Speech Self Evaluation
1. I believe I did well on connecting my slides together. After watching my speech I noticed that I was able to connect the topics of each slide together with the next one, and that it gave my speech a good flow. I also believe my time management was good as well. I was able to keep each slide to its required 15 seconds and was able to finish within our 3 minute limit.
2. Other than a couple simple facts, such as, that I own a rabbit and that I love animals; I don’t believe my audience learned as much about me as they did my topic. I wanted my audience to learn what it is like to own a rabbit, and maybe even get them to consider owning a rabbit one day. I believe that I taught the audience interesting facts and tips about

I believe that, while my narrative was strong in the sense that my audience was able to understand what I was portraying, my narrative still needs some improvements. While watching the audience I could tell that people were understanding the points I was making about my speech. However, when I watched back my speech on the video I noticed I was very stiff and nervous. I believe if I could have been as relaxed and open during my speech as some of my other classmates were I might have been able to connect with my audience a bit better. Getting comfortable while speaking in front of the class would be my goal in the next speech so I can connect with them more.
4. I believe my language choice was simple enough for the audience to understand without the speech becoming too complicated. There is a lot of weird terminology when it comes to rabbits such as a quick, a nose biff, and many others. For someone who has raised a couple different rabbits these terms are just common language, but for someone who’s never had a rabbit they wouldn’t have made sense. For my speech I decided instead of using up time to define terms that I would just explain what these were without using the names. I believe that this made my speech more understandable and easier on the

When I first started my speech I was not comfortable at all. I remember while being up there my hands were shaking and I had to clench my fists underneath my jacket sleeves to keep calms. As the speech went on I slowly started to feel more comfortable, but I don’t know if I would say I was ever completely comfortable. I tried to not let my nervousness show when I gave my speech. I still spoke loudly for everyone to hear, but I believe my posture was a bit off. I was swaying a bit while giving my speech because I was too nervous to stand still, and I don’t believe it really looked proper when I went back to watch it. Off the top of my head I don’t believe there is really anything I can do to make myself more comfortable, as much as just having done it once already in front of the class will make me more comfortable. Part of my nervousness came from being in front of a bunch of unfamiliar people, but now that I’m getting to know the class a lot more I think that alone will make me more
Now, giving a speech can be a little stressful so I will put into practice what I preach, that is...always remember the ABC to the XYZ of public speaking. ABC..Always Be Confident, ?XYZ..Xamine Your Zipper. (check zipper).
My youth pastor delivered a very well put together presentation on time management. The purpose of the presentation was to motivate us to become more efficient. She told us how time is something that you can lose and never get back. The structure of the presentation was well organized with a clear beginning, middle, and end. This allowed the audience to grasp the message clearly.
Upon reviewing my speech, I can understand where I need to improve my speaking skills, as well as places where I just need to fine-tune them. I chose to talk about skiing because it is an activity that I look forward to every winter, and knowing I had a trip out west over break I knew I would be able to talk about this topic easily. Although I do think that I gave an effective speech, I think there were many things to learn from the overall content, organization, and delivery of the speech. The content of my speech was an area that I think was adequate for an informative speech.
While watching my video I did notice that I was able to understand and clearly know what the main point was. I spoke in a clear and a tone loud enough for everyone to hear. The speech was organized very well, so one idea or thought flowed to the next. I don’t think I need to change anything in regards to my central idea being clear. I was satisfied with that part of the speech.
I did this by making sure that I added clear pictures, had a legible font, and nice colors to catch their attention. I wanted to make sure that my slides had the right amount words for the students to read. I knew that they would lose interest in my presentation if I added large paragraphs or had too many words to my presentation. I had a total of twelve slides. I read over my slides multiple times to make sure that everything was correct. Each of my slides had a lot of information about Countee Cullen, the Harlem Renaissance, and the poems that I researched. Also, I added the quiz to my powerpoint to keep the students on their
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. Nevertheless, although I was not able to present to the quality that I had wished, the feedback received was reassuring that I had not done terribly bad. I was able to see myself grow as a presenter as I noticed that my
I also think I improved the conversational aspect of my speaking voice. I am extremely proud of my introduction when I signed and spoke at the same time because in American Sign Language, you only sign. By combining these two acts, I not only engaged the audience by forcing them to look at me, but I also explained to them what I was saying and did not leave them confused. I believe my thesis could have used some further work to clarify my main points. I think my speech was easy to follow as a listener due to my organization of ideas and
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking
After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. Some areas of the rubric that I still think I need to work on is being more specific on answering the essential question making it more obvious as to what my over
For the aforementioned reasons, there is no doubt that fears and shy had been controlled myself throughout the years. According to The People’s Almanac presents The Book of Lists by David Wallechinsky, Irving and Amy Wallace, one of the topic was titled “The 14 Worst Human Fears”, and the fear of speaking in public is the first fear of all fears (Richard I. Garber, 2009). This make me realized that it is perfectly normal to feel anxiety and fears to speak. Everyone, even an experienced speakers has some anxiety when speaking in front of a group of people. As for my experience and situation, I should have just fight the fears in me to throw my voice out asking questions in class otherwise I would might left behind a bit and need to struggle up for the subjects more than everyone does. Asking questions does not make you any stupid, it’s the source of
Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
This speech did not make me nervous nor did it stress me out. I felt comfortable talking about color blindness because I had a good understanding of what it was, making it super easy to talk about. The informative speech stuck out in my mind because it was one of the speeches that I made really good eye contact, and I felt like I was saying very useful information unlike many of my other speeches. I am so glad we did an informative speech because it help me gain more confidence in my speaking abilities. I remember during the speech, I looked at the crowd and I actually saw them being attentive, and seeing my classmates like that made me feel like I was presenting my speech very well while being
While sitting in my speech class at Harbor College, I watched my classmates give introductory speeches in front of the class. Some of the students were swaying back and forth-, which made it difficult to view them. A few of them were tapping their fingers on the podium. As I can recall, one female continuously tapped her long nails on the table (to me this became a nuisance). What I noticed most was that many of them could not keep still-only 5 people out of the 30 produced smooth speeches, those that were confident and had previous experience. From my observation, it was evident that they were nervous and scared.
Based on one of the few recordings of my speech, I noticed many things I didn 't know before. For instance, I notice the times where I didn’t remember my lines, so I refer back to my notes. If I were to rate myself I would give myself 8 out of 10 because my presentations all met the minimum requirement. Although I still need to work on my extemporaneous delivery skills and writing the attention grabber part of the introduction. The outline helps keep my speech organized but it takes while to write it. I like adding visual aids to my presentations because it makes the slides fun to look at.
Throughout the semester I became a more confident public speaker. The first assignment that we had to do for our education class was to introduce our self. I practiced what I was going to say and how I was going to say it that weekend. However, when I got up to present my mind went completely blank. Throughout the course of the semester I learned what I need to have up with me when I present do that I do not blank on what I wanted to say. In the beginning when I got up to present my heart was racing and my hands were shaking. Now I make sure I breathe and tell myself that I know what I am going to talk about. So I still don’t talking in public but I feel more comfortable doing it. I need to work on being more confident when I have to present a topic. Talking to Mrs. Nealy after my mini lesson I have more confidence when I am talking about a math concept than any other topic. Throughout the semester my writing skills have greatly improved. The thing I need to work on is managing my time better so that I have more time to edit my papers.
