I failed Spanish but can speak 4 languages now: If you have ever tried to learn a foreign language in school or through language books you buy at the book store, then you understand the great difficulties that exist in learning a new language this way. I took two years of Spanish in school, and at the end of the two years I could barely say "the book is on the table." The best grade I ever got from 8 terms of Spanish was a C-. It seemed like learning a foreign language was just not my thing. After high school graduation and five years later, I was able to speak four different languages and understand five. The languages I now speak: English, Chinese, Portuguese, French, and I can understand Spanish (because of Portuguese). I don't mean to say …show more content…
Before I went I couldn't speak any Portuguese. To get around, I carried a phrase book and read from it. I made some Brazilian friends who all spoke English, so I didn't learn a lot of Portuguese from them. Instead what I did to learn was go to the book store and buy comic books. The ones I read were the "Cascao" comics (the most popular ones in Brazil). Also, every morning I would watch a TV program called "Bom dia e Cia." During the day I would go around and practice the phrases that I learned. After four months I was making friends that didn't speak English, only Portuguese, and having conversations with them. As my Portuguese improved, I would read more difficult books, and watch more difficult TV …show more content…
I felt that the only way to do this was to be able to read Chinese. I sat down with a list of 500 common Chinese characters and started to memorize them. By the end of the first week, I was able to read simple reading material. (That is the great thing about languages, the range of vocabulary words used is very small). From that point on I felt a lot more comfortable with my Chinese, and improved at a greater rate. From there, I started listening to Chinese music and watching movies and cartoons in Chinese, just like how I had done with Portuguese. I have continued to learn Chinese in this way and now Chinese, although the most difficult to learn, is my most fluent
Within months I learned a handful of words watching cartoons. words provided comfort when conversing to others. I also used my new learned words to participate in classes at school which I started exactly a month after arriving. Determined to speak English in order to “appear normal” to the other students, I began the process of trying to read every word of every book I stumbled upon. As the months passed, my English improved.
...achers thought I spoke Spanish. I found the English language somewhat easy to learn, moreover, I have to thank many of the English-speaking friends that I made back then to teach me the slang and spent time with me outside school. Mathematics and Economics were easy for me, I can say with confidence that I had one of the highest grades in comparison to my English-speaking classmates. The main problems that I had were the communication skills, both writing and speaking English proved to be the greatest challenge for me during that year. My need to communicate with others drove my incentive to master the language, within the first two years; many of my friends were surprised how well my English was. Despite the foreign accent, they had all agreed that my English was very efficient.
Spanish has a very large and present role in the United States, as it claims the status of second largest language in the nation. Not only does Spanish hold such a title in the United States, but the United States is also the second country with the largest Spanish speaking population in the world, second to Mexico, and this population of Spanish speakers is expected to continue growing. California is one of the states with the largest Spanish speaking populations and the Los Angeles county is home to the largest Latino population of the country. The LA county is the exact context for the makeup of Spanish speakers in this language profile.
Portuguese is beautiful language when listened too. The language is one of the Romance languages and was influenced by many cultures during its time of its uprising of becoming a country. First influenced by the Romans when invading the Iberian peninsula in Europe where today Spain, Portugal, Andorra and part of France coexist today (The Portuguese Language). Then was influenced by the Germanic people which influenced the current Portuguese style. Not only was Portuguese affected by Latin brought by the Romans but also the Celtic, Germanic people and even the French. Portuguese gained new words such as the Portuguese word ‘guerra’ which means war from the Germanic people. Interestingly enough, the word 'rua' (street) is similar to the French word 'rue' which was brought over from when French infiltrated Portugal during the 10th and 11th centuries.(The Portuguese Language)
I learned was at school. I was overcome with excitement before my first day of school, but when i got there i soon found out that no one else spoke my language. I didn’t very much english; seeing everyone being able to communicate with each other made me more interested in expanding my literacy skills. I went home every night and read for 30 minutes, within a few weeks I was able to understand and communicate with my peers. One of my memorable memories was when I was in fifth grade and I couldn't understand a thing that was
Moving from Brazil to the United States I did not speak, read, or write English so I had to learn on my own. At first it was difficult, but I had no choice. I was forced to learn so I could do most basic things. I set goals for myself and found different ways to learn. I bought books, listened to CD’s, bought grammar books made for first grade students, and listened and payed attention to how people talk. When it was time for me to talk, I was very afraid of making mistakes, especially when I was around Brazilians that I knew spoke English well. However, I knew that the most efficient way for me to learn was speaking and learning from my mistakes, so with time I overcame my
This really helped me pick up the language quickly. In this class, we had to take vocabulary quizzes on the words by spelling them and writing what they mean. This class also required me to take dialogue tests by speaking the language to my teacher, Mr. Topacio. The last kind of teats are the language tests; this included things like grammar, rules, and such. There are many tricky rules for German. For example the different words have different articles such as der, die, and das. This can make learning much more difficult. I could also learn German from my grandma because she is originally from Germany. Because she has family there, in order for them to be able to talk, my grandma has to keep up her German, so she would try to practice with me too. This is very fun because I can hear her stories from growing up where I lived. This way was kind of difficult though because it was hard to teach and learn over the phone across an ocean. She sometimes visited thought so I could talk to her during the visits. Another way to practice is talking to German people, and asking questions when we went out to the store. This helped me because I would try to speak German first, but then if I didn't know a word, or if they couldn't understand me, then I could just ask them if they spoke English. Finally, I could read street signs, advertisements, and I could watch or listen to German T.V. This was useful because this taught me to process the language quicker. Overall, there were many ways for me to learn German, and they all paid
To learn basic English took around 6 years attending ESL classes. More than 20 years have passed and I am still learning English. I have an strong accent, my grammar is not a good as I would like, and I am not confident speaking English as I am in Spanish. Although English and Spanish have the same alphabet, it’s have been very difficult for me to learn English.
Learning to speak one language fluently and eloquently is nice, but It’s not nice enough. My first language was Spanish which i learned at home by my family, however I cannot say that i have learned to speak another
Learning another language can be very challenging, frustrating, as well as exciting. The language that I chose to study and learn more about is Spanish. I read and speak Creole fluently so that helps in understanding French somewhat. Yet living in South Florida, and having a huge Hispanics population all around has been most difficult, especially when I go to places like the store or the gas station and I have to communicate with people who do not speak English. I have been many places in South Florida were
I have had experience with learning two languages, Spanish and Arabic. The first time I was exposed to Spanish was when I was in kindergarten and I did not study it again until high school. I did not begin learning Arabic until my last year of high school and decided to major in Arabic once I got to college. The experiences I had learning these languages were completely different.
In this modern world, learning a new language is a huge endeavor in a person’s life. In order for someone to learn a new language, it is necessary for them to learn the language structure, its phonemes, facial expressions, word collocations, and other detail aspects related to learning a language. When communicating with someone that can fluently speak the language you are trying to learn, talking to them may be a challenge because it takes awhile for someone who is foreign with the language to find the right words to properly express the message you are trying to convey. When learning the English language, I usually focus on learning words through images and books. I hardly ever translate the words to or from my language because translating it wouldn’t really be exactly the meaning I was looking for. Even though I grew up in a different country that spoke a different language, it was a great idea to learn other languages like English to be able to understand and communicate with other people who don’t speak my language.
An ability that many individual wants to achieve is the ability to learn a new language. Every language has its own difficulty and many times they take up quite a bit of time to learn. Another factor that plays a critical role in language learning is age. Age can be a factor because depending on the age an individual would have an easier or harder time learning a new language. For younger individuals’ language learning seems easier. Language learning is an ability that could take someone months, maybe even years to learn. However, if the language learned is not used after it has been achieved can be forgotten. Nonetheless, there are individuals who would become fluent in a language. No one can really master a new language, due to the fact that languages will continue to change. Every individual has a different style of learning a new language. For example, some individuals would prefer to learn a new language by going through online tutorials and another individual would prefer to learn a new language by attending a
While I was a child I had to face the situation of having to learn Italian as foreign language to go to school and to learn some Sesutu (Lesotho Language) so I could be able to play with those few kids around the place where I lived. My language learning experience at the beginning was rough but with time it got better. Social interaction was a key factor that allowed me to achieve learning.
